Titan Salvage workers have cut 460 tons of steel off of the remains of the shipwrecked New Carissa. Here is a look at the salvage action in the surf off Coos Bay's North Spit from late July.
» New Carissa July 2008 - Photo GalleryIt was a disaster. The wood chip freighter New Carissa steamed in the Pacific Ocean off Coos Bay in a wicked winter storm. It was Feb. 4, 1999. The storm surge pushed the New Carissa toward shore. And, there the vessel stayed, its hull sinking deep in the sandy ocean bottom just off Horsfall Beach.
