Incorporated in 1903, North Bend was named by lumber tycoon Asa Simpson and his son. Louis, for the city's location on the point of land around which Coos Bay bends. Located at the southern edge of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, just across the historic and picturesque McCullough Bridge, the city also has several parks, a historic downtown and the coast's largest indoor shopping mall. The average annual rainfall, measure at the weather station at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, is almost 63 inches and the average annual temperature is 52 degrees Fahrenheit. July, August and September are the warmest months, and January and December are the coldest, averaging approximately 49 degrees Fahrenheit.
