Golf has developed into one of the most popular leisure activities on the South Coast, with opportunities expanding as new courses are developed.

Golfers can choose from 11 public and two private courses, with two additional golf projects in the works. The courses range from relatively easy to extremely challenging and from relatively casual to the nationally renowned Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Ranging from Florence to Brookings, the courses are picturesque and unique in their own ways.

One of the most popular courses is Kentuck Golf Course in North Bend, located off East Bay Drive, near the Kentuck Inlet. The 18-hole course is mostly flat and popular for beginners, while still providing challenge for more experienced golfers. For more information, call the pro shop at 756-4464.

Another popular course is Sunset Bay Golf Course, set in a valley near the Charleston state parks, on Cape Arago Highway. People can call 888-9301 to get more information about this peaceful nine-hole course that often is filled with wildlife.

Up the coast, another popular nine-hold course is Forest Hills Country Club in Reedsport, which has memberships like a private club, but is open to the public. The course office can be reached at (541) 271-2626 for more information.

World-class golf tournaments like the 2006 Curtis Cup, held at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, attract people to the South Coast from all over the globe.

At Bandon Face Rock Golf Course, golfers will see a number of short holes protected by a meandering creek and often challenging winds. The nine-hole course is flat and easy to walk. Golfers can call 347-3818 for information.

Narrow fairways and challenging greens will greet golfers at Salmon Run Golf and Wilderness Preserve, a scenic 18-hole course near Brookings. For more information, those interested can call (877) 423-1234 or (541) 469-4888.

Cedar Bend Golf Course, just north of Gold Beach is an outstanding layout, with nine greens in a scenic valley, but two cups on each green and two sets of tee boxes for an 18-hole feel. Call (541) 247-6911 for more information.

The courses that are quickly gaining the most national attention are the trio of courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Result, just north of Bandon. Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails all have received strong reviews by numerous golf magazines and have combined to make Bandon Dunes one of the top golf destination resorts in the country. The South Coast also offers two private courses, though one, Coos Country Club, allows some public play. Call 267-7257 for more information on this 18-hole course south of Coos Bay, which also includes a public putting green and driving range.

Between Coquille and Myrtle Point is Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, a course open to all Elks and their guests. For more information, call 572-5367.

Two more golf courses near Bandon are in the planning and construction stages a fourth course at Bandon Dunes called Old Macdonald, set for a 2010 opening, and Bandon Crossings, an 18-hole course located about five miles south of town set to open this summer.
