Gold Beach is located in Curry County on U.S. Highway 101 north of Brookings. The city was incorporated in 1948. Discovery of gold in the sands of the Rogue River prompted its name. Today, Gold Beach is a sport fishing mecca that offers camping, hiking and other nearby recreational activities. It is situated at the mouth of the mighty Rogue River where many visitors enjoy mail and jet boat rides and hooking giant salmon.
Retirees like town near California border
Brookings is located in Curry County on U.S. Highwya 101. It is the coast's southernmost city. Incorporated in 1951, the city was named for lumber baron Robert S. Brookings. A popular retirement town, the community also attracts visitors for ocean and river sport fishing. Commercial fishing vessels also are based here, bolstering the economy with hauls from the Pacific. The Chetco River, just south of town, is popular with salmon fishermen and recreationalists. It's also a gateway to the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area, a favorite with hikers, campers and amateur botanists.
