Coos Bay
Largest city, port on Oregon Coast is home to several historic buildings
Coos Bay is home to the Oregon Coast's largest seaport. The city was incorporated in 1874, and originally named Marshfield. The area is now known as Coos Bay, named after the native tribe of the Kusan family and the tidal Coos River bay. The coast's biggest city features many popular parks and historical buildings, including the historic Egyptian Theatre, which features favorite movies from years past, and the Chandler Hotel. Bay. The average annual rainfall for the area, measured at the weather station at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, totals almost 63 inches. Ironically, nearby Allegany up the Coos River, on the way to Golden and Silver Falls State Park, receives 90 inches of rain per year. The temperature averages in the mid-50's, with August and September ranking as the warmest months.
