Sam Brownback
Sam Brownback
Biography:
Born: Sept. 12, 1956

Party: Republican

Family: Married to Mary Brownback, with five children: Abby, Andy, Elizabeth (Liz), Mark, Jenna.

History: Sam Brownback grew up in Kansas farm country. Now, he is running for president.

The Kansas senator has come a long way since working as a radio broadcaster, then turning to law in the early 1980s.

Brownback got into public service at a young age. He was appointed Kansas's secretary of agriculture at the age of 38, the youngest in the state's history, and he held that office until it was dissolved in 1993.

He ran for Congress the next year, won, and two years later when Sen. Bob Dole resigned to run for president in 1996, he ran for that post.

Brownback defeated the governor's choice for the nomination in the GOP primary, then went on to win the general election.

Brownback is a conservative. He's anti-abortion and opposes gay marriage. He's also worked to ban human cloning.

He's also been a critic of the Bush administration on spending.

Brownback is fond of saying that he is "pro-life" and "whole life." In addition to opposing abortion, he also opposes, except in limited circumstances, the death penalty, though he's said he won't seek to impose his personal beliefs if he's elected. He's also called for a solution to the genocide in Darfur.

On Iraq, Brownback opposes setting a timetable for withdrawal, but he holds common ground with Sen. Joe Biden, a Democratic presidentia candidate, in endorsing a strategy to set up separate states for the Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish factions. The Bush administration opposes the strategy.

Brownback trails the other GOP candidates in early polls.
