Mitt Romney
Biography:
Born: March 12, 1947
Party: Republican
Family: Married with five sons, Tagg, Matt, Josh, Craig and Ben.
History: Mitt Romney's career arc has led him from Harvard's law and business schools to heading a private investment firm, then an Olympic committee, a governorship. And now, a candidate for president of the United States.
By any measure, Romney, the son of an auto company and a governor himself, has been a successful man.
He was introduced to public life early. Born in Michigan, his father, George Romnmey, was the governor there.
The younger Romney went to college in Utah and in Boston and, after graduating from the latter, stayed there.
He eventually founded an investment firm, Bain Capital, making millions of dollars.
He made a run at Sen. Ted Kennedy, Massachusetts longtime senator but lost. And, a few years later, was asked to turn around the financially ailing 2002 winter Olympics.
The winter event was judged a success, as was Romney's stewardship.
As governor of Massachussets from 2002 to 2006, Rommey is prone to talking about the budgets he cut and the universal health insurance program created on his watch. But he's also been faulted for hewing to the state's liberal leanings, then switching positions on such issues as abortion, gun control and other topics dear to conservatives in his party out of convenience.
As a Mormon, there also have been questions raised about whether he can be elected.
