History: John Edwards, is making his second bid for president. He was also a candidate in 2004.
Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, gained prominence as a lawyer, winning verdicts worth millions.
He got elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998, and launched his presidential bid a few years later.
The son of a mill worker, Edwards ran a decidedly populist campaign urging a greater focus on poverty and the "two Americas" he says exists. He failed to win the nomination, but settled for the number two spot on John Kerry's presidential ticket.
Since 2004, Edwards has run a poverty center in North Carolina and traveled extensively, overseas and to early nominating states.
In the 2008 campaign, he again is attacking poverty and has called for immediately withdrawal of tens of thousands of troops from Iraq. He's also apologized for his 2002 vote authorizing the war.
Edwards became the first Democratic candidate to introduce a comprehensive health care plan.
He, and his campaign, also are dealing with wife Elizabeth's recurrence of cancer, which was diagnosed in 2004 but has spread from her breast to the bone.
