Joe Biden
Biography:
Born: Nov. 20, 1942 in Scranton, PA.
Party: Democrat
Family: He is married to the former Jill Jacobs, with three children: Beau, Hunter and Ashley. They have five grandchildren.
History:
Joe Biden's spent more years as a senator than not.
Elected in 1972, when he was 29, Biden (who turned 30 before he took office) has spent 35 years in Washington, D.C.
He's gained recognition as a longtime member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, presiding over the contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.
He's also worked on anti-crime bills, as well as legislation aimed at curbing violence against women.
Biden is making his second run for president. He dropped out in 1988, when a video showed parts of his stump speech were lifted from a British politicians.
Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been touting a plan to separate the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds in Iraq, creating separate states with a basic central government. He, too, voted to authorize the war in 2002 but has expressed regret for it.
Biden has a "moderate to liberal" record in the Senate, according to National Journal, and in his presidential campaign he is banking on his experience to win him votes.
He's also called for "dramatically increasing investment in energy and climate change research and technology."
He's also pushed for making college more affordable, including a plan to allow high school students perform service projects to earn money for school.
Biden, who has hones his rhetorical skills over the past 35 years, can be a passionate, ultra-articulate speaker, but he's also been known to drone.
Early in the campaign he made comments about rival Barack Obama that were heavily criticized for racial insensitivity. He has since apologized.
