Portland teacher indicted on meth charges

Friday, December 18, 2009 |
PORTLAND (AP) — A Portland high school teacher has been indicted on charges of delivery and possession of methamphetamine.
A Multnomah County grand jury indicted 35-year-old Zuleyma Noemi Figueroa, who taught Spanish at Benson Polytechnic High School. The Oregonian says she is scheduled for arraignment today in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
The indictment stems from a Nov. 19 raid at a home where police say the teacher stayed with a co-defendant.
Sgt. Greg Stewart says not quite an ounce of meth was seized, as well as $10,000 in cash, scales and packaging materials.
Figueroa was placed on unpaid leave in early December when the school district learned of the allegations.
She has worked for Portland Public Schools since 2001. School District spokesman Matt Shelby says she’ll remain on unpaid leave pending resolution of the criminal charges.
