The Southwestern Oregon Community College wrestling team dominated visiting Lassen College on Saturday, winning the annual early season dual 49-3.

Laker coach Adam Whitlatch wasn’t surprised by the result.

“That’s kind of how we were suppposed to do against that team,” he said. “They wrestled hard. They went out and got after it. It was a fun duel to watch.”

It’s the first and last time the Lakers were scheduled to wrestle at home before next year. The Lakers have four duals against colleges in Washington, Idaho and Montana during a three-day stretch from Dec. 11-13. Their next home match is Jan. 4 against Yakima.

Whitlatch is happy with what he’s seen from his squad so far this season.

“We’ve got a great group of kids,” he said. “They’re a smart group. They’re doing well in school and they’re working hard.”

Against Lassen, the Lakers got pins by Thomas Gowing at 125 pounds, Matt Pride (141), Jesse Chunn (157) and Darrell Price Jr. (285). Michael Viloria had a major decision at 133 and Jacob Stanley won a close match at 149. Jake Rice (174), Hank Turner (184) and Tim Hester (197) all won by forfeit.

While Gowing, Chunn and Hester are returners from last year’s team and Pride was a redshirt for the Lakers, Whitlatch did not use some of his best grapplers in the dual.

The Lakers return three other qualifiers from last year’s NJCAA national tournament — Trent Stevenson, Austin Thompson and Anibal Vasquez.

The team will face tough challenges throughout the season in the typically difficult region.

“We’re not going to have anything that easy again,” Whitlatch said.

Women lose by one

The Southwestern women’s basketball team lost 74-73 to Seattle Community College during a tournament at Yakima, Wash., on Saturday, missing a shot at the buzzer.

The Lakers were down seven points with one and a half minutes to play, and scored six quick points before missing the final shot, Southwestern coach Mike Herbert said.

Herbert said despite being knocked out of the tournament before the final day, the Lakers improved from their first game on Friday, with fewer turnovers.

“We protected the ball a lot better, only 16 turnovers, which is great,” Herbert said.

“We didn’t shoot very well again,” he said. “We just didn’t hit shots.”

The Lakers shot 35 percent from the floor, 26 percent from 3-point range and 59 percent from the free throw line.

Freshman Kelly Millager finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

Former Marshfield standout Brianna George added 13 points and seven rebounds and took two charges, Herbert said.

“She just had a phenomenal game,” he said. “She played great.”

Southwestern will play Highline  on Friday as it travels to the Clackamas tournament in Oregon City.
