Vale ended Gold Beach’s season with a 30-0 win in the Class 3A football quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Vikings scored on their first possession on a touchdown run by Jeff Williams and again late in the first half on a 9-yard run by Drew Torrey. A Gold Beach fumble set up a field goal by Austin Tolman that gave Vale a 17-0 halftime lead.
Williams and Torrey each scored again in the second half for the final margin.
The Panthers, who had a young team compared to the squads that beat Vale 42-0 for the state title two years ago and were runners-up in 2008, ended the season 8-3.
Gold Beach coach KevinSwift said Vale used motivation from the 2007 title game.
“They obviously had a lot of motivation,”he said. “It seemed to work for them.”
Swift also said Vale earned the win.
“Vale is a better team,”he said. “We didn’t play well, but a lot of the reason you don’t play well is the other team is better.”
Vale will face Rainier in the semifinals this week, while Sunset Conference champion Cascade Christian battles Amity in the other semifinal.
In the Class 4A playoffs, Far West League champion Douglas was upset by Sweet Home 16-14 in the second round on Saturday at Roseburg. Sweet Home meets Phoenix in the quarterfinals this week in a battle of the two teams North Bend beat during the preseason this year.
