Tax money processed in Portland

Sunday, November 22, 2009 |
Question: I want to know why we are mailing our county tax assessment to a bank in Portland? As we have many banks in Coos County that could handle this business and keep the cash at home, or just mail a check to Coquille tax department.
Answer: Coos County Treasurer Mary Barton said county taxes are handled by U.S. Bank. Its main processing center is located in Portland, which is why tax assessments are mailed there. After receiving and processing the assessments, the bank electronically sends all the information back to the county.
Barton said there are no banks in this area that could handle the demand or have the equipment needed to electronically process all the tax payments.
She said most processing centers are in the Portland metropolitan area.
U.S. Bank only handles the county’s tax assessments, not all of its banking.
