A chapel funeral service will be held for Milton G. Casey, 85, of Coos Bay, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave., with the Rev. Norm Russell, of the North Bend Church of Christ, officiating. A private family graveside committal will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay.
Milton was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Forsyth, Mo., to Roy and May Casey. He died Nov. 19, 2009, in Coos Bay at in his home surrounded by his family.
Milton grew up in rural Missouri in a loving family, the fourth of seven children. In 1948, Milton, with his brother Clinton and his wife, Lorene, drove from Missouri to Coos Bay to start a new life in the West. Milton worked in the mills, including many years with Evans Products and later with Georgia-Pacific. In the early 1950s, Milton met Elsamae Stromberg and they were married on Nov. 9, 1952, in Coos Bay. Milton and Elsamae were married for 45 years.
Milton and Elsamae were quite the team. Elsamae ran Casey Saddlery for more than 50 years while Milton raised and traded cattle and horses. Elsamae loved antique shops and flea markets and Milton loved cattle auctions and trail rides. Each year for 22 years, they bought an older house in Coos Bay, fixed it up, and sold it as a small family side business. Milton also worked with his sons, Bradley and Bennett, in Casey Construction providing excavation, construction and hauling services.
One of the original founders of the Coos County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse in 1958, Milton was the recipient of the Posse’s High Point Man of the Year award in 1965 and was awarded his 30-year service award to the posse in 1988. Milton loved the posse for the camaraderie of good friends, the annual trail rides and events and the service to the community. The great tragedies of Milton’s life were the premature deaths of his two sons, Bentley Martin Casey in 1979 and Bradley Paul Casey in 2007, and the loss of his beloved Elsamae in 1997.
Milton’s final years were spent living in the family home surrounded by loved ones including grandchildren, Justin and Cassandra, watching bull riding on TV, visiting with family and friends, and making the occasional trip to a cattle auction. Milton greatly appreciated the loving care and support provided by Misty Lewis.
Milton is survived by daughter, Paula Casey and her husband, Nick Handy of Olympia, Wash.; son, Bennett Milton Casey; daughter-in-law, Karla Casey; grandchildren, Darci Casey, David Casey, Justin Casey, Cassandra Casey, Benjamin Handy and Esther Handy; and stepgranddaughter, Dessiree Watson.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Coos County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse, Coos County Courthouse, 250 N. Baxter St., Coquille, OR 97423.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
