RICHMOND, Texas — Michelle Wie withdrew from the LPGA Tour Championship on Thursday after hobbling through her first round on a sprained left ankle.

The 20-year-old Wie, fresh off her first tour victory last week, shot an even-par 72 on Thursday. She first injured her ankle at the Solheim Cup in August.

Wie was 3 under through 12 holes. Her ankle gave way on the 13th tee, and she stumbled backward, sliced her shot into the rough and took her first bogey.

Selig says some teams lost money in 2009

CHICAGO — Some teams lost money in 2009, baseball commissioner Bud Selig said after the final owners meeting of the year.

Selig said final figures for this year are still being calculated and everyone is living in the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression. He declined to identify the teams.

Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped 6.7 percent last season from an average of 32,528 in 2008 to an average of 30,350. Total attendance of 73.4 million was baseball’s fifth-highest.

Henry says replay would be ‘fairest solution’

LONDON — Thierry Henry says the “fairest solution” is to replay the France-Ireland World Cup playoff after he set up the deciding goal with a hand ball.

Henry issued a statement today admitting he handled the ball and felt embarrassed at how France qualified for the World Cup at the expense of Ireland.

But Henry said the hand ball was an “instinctive reaction” and denied cheating.

Earlier today, FIFA rejected Ireland’s request for a replay.

Donovan named most valuable player

SEATTLE — Los Angeles forward Landon Donovan was named the 2009 MLS most valuable player after helping lead the Galaxy to the MLS Cup finals for the first time since 2005.

Despite all the accolades he’s garnered for being the best player in the U.S., this is the first time Donovan has won the top award in MLS.

Donovan scored 12 goals and had six assists during the regular season, helping the Galaxy earn the best record in the Western Conference.

NBA

Iverson free to sign with any NBA team

NEW YORK — Allen Iverson has cleared waivers and is free to sign with any NBA team.

The former MVP was waived Tuesday after playing only three games with the Memphis Grizzlies and no team claimed him in the following 48 hours, making him a free agent.

The New York Knicks are discussing whether they want to bring in the 34-year-old guard. Iverson was unhappy coming off the bench last season in Detroit and this season with the Grizzlies, so there isn’t expected to be much interest in him.

Former NBA star agrees to plea deal in shooting

TRENTON, N.J. — Retired NBA star Jayson Williams has agreed to a plea deal that would send him to prison for up to three years for accidentally shooting a driver at his New Jersey estate in 2002, a person with knowledge of the case told The Associated Press.

Williams, who retired in 2000 after playing nine seasons in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, was to face a retrial in January on a reckless manslaughter count.
