Airport boss takes Georgia job

NORTH BEND — Airport director Gary LeTellier is off to greener pastures — or warmer pastures anyway.

LeTellier recently accepted the position of director at the Augusta Regional Airport in Georgia. Augusta commissioners approved LeTellier’s contract on Oct. 22, according to public documents. He starts the new job Jan. 11.

Before he leaves the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, he’ll bring the incoming executive director up to speed on current projects.

LeTellier announced his retirement in April, after managing the airport since 2003. As part of his contract, commissioners agreed to pay him a 90-day severance package, including salary and benefits and 400 hours of unused vacation time.

Chairman Mike Lehman confirmed that LeTellier is still in line to receive the package. LeTellier’s term ends on Dec. 31.

LeTellier earns $103,000 a year. His replacement will receive a $110,000 annual salary, Mineau said.

During Thursday’s a public meeting, LeTellier presented Coos County Airport District board members a letter he wrote to Theresa Cook, who steps in next month, in which he outlines how the new manager can pick up where his efforts will end.

Chief among them: Improving northbound air service.

The North Bend terminal’s flights north have been  hampered with fewer departures and limited connections at the Portland International Airport.

Key to revitalizing that route might be a Connect Oregon III grant. The North Bend airport and municipal airports in Klamath Falls and Salem partnered to apply for the $1.4 million state grant to buy a guaranteed twice-daily service from each airport to the Portland hub.

The application is in the mail. It requires a $75,000 match, which Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has agreed to pay, said resort manager Hank Hickox.

“We feel strongly that (Portland) is a viable service for North Bend and the South Coast region,” Hickox said.

Hickox noted the commercial provider, SkyWest Airlines, will kick in its fair share of money to get the project under way.

The application will go through a series of reviews by both the state Department of Aviation and the Department of Transportation.

“The process will be subjected to political scrutiny and needs to be followed closely with your attendance and participation at all hearings,” LeTellier wrote to Cook.

Another possible project the new director will oversee is lengthening the north/south runway by several hundred feet to accommodate jets for the healthy San Francisco route. The project would require a design and an impact study. That would take years and, right now, there’s no money to pay for it.

LeTellier recommends Cook look into the possibility of refinancing the nearly $6 million loan from the state that funded the new terminal to pay for the runway extension.

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has offered more than a million cubic yards of fill for the project. LeTellier said that could save several million dollars.

Too bad Gary's last couple of pay checks (From announcement of Gary being replaced forward) couldn't be put towards this area's debt that he helped create here...

P.S. Good luck Augusta Regional Airport in Georgia & keep an eye on your wallet/check book after Gary arrives...

Best of luck to you, Gary, on your new adventure. I think I speak for many others when I say "Thank you for all you did, despite all the hurdles you faced!"

NB_REZ, Maybe some day you will be woman/man enough to post your own name.. I hear Steve is looking for a campaign manager>> Why not stand by your man?

Iwanttoknow why Steve Pickering don't change his name to Charley Brown that way his theme song for election could be, "Why is everyone picking on me for County Commissioner. Wait until I'm elected then pick on me! Just a suggestion! Steve I would bet folks would pick on you even if you were Santa Claus!! Once again I'm tempted to run for public office so folks will pick out my faults, that way I could correct them and be perfect like them. Just.........to it. Bye

I may have read it wrong but I believe the article's about LeTellier, not Pick. It sounds like its good LeTellier's leaving, and, if Cook's smart she won't listen to his "advice" too closely. I see where even his wife his leaving him.

At least Steve Pickering is man enough to use his real name while posting comments. The rest of you are taking cowardice pot shots at him hidden behind an anonymous user name.

I was just thinking about the airport and no planes coming in here.
I bet if that happens BANDON DUNES would come up with the money to get an airline to come in here and pay for it themselves to bring in their customers that don't have "private jets". They certainly need an airline more than anyone else around here. Most of their customers will not drive here from far away, and probably not even from the Portland airport if they flew in there.

1313 wrote on Nov 23, 2009 9:41 AM:

After reading the world news over the weekend, it sounds like airports and cities like ours will soon be without any airlines coming in here soon. Small towns like ours will be without any kind of transportation out of town. No busses, no trains, no airplanes, no way out, but by car. And what do you do if you don't drive ?

whatintheworld wrote on Nov 23, 2009 8:43 AM:

Dear Mr. Pickering: I seldom am a blogger, here or elsewhere. But this is interesting. I do read the paper online occasionally and I always chuckle at your comments. I presume from these and prior posts of yours that you are the appointed spokesperson for the airport. You sir may not realize just how scary you appear to be! I understand that you are a retired Fortune 100 corporate executive. Please where may be visit your web site with information for voters and experience listed; or please what is that corporate experience that will benefit all of us who love the Coos Bay area. And, you are safe, I would never run against you for county commissioner. I am opposed to decisions Whitty has made. But the comparison of her capabilities and experience to yours is night and day. In the current (probable) three person race, she gets my physical support, my money, and my vote.

orecoast007 wrote on Nov 22, 2009 10:10 PM:

Steve Pickering, Enquiring minds want to know!!! Why in the **** should we vote you in to the BOC and Nikki Whitty out? I dare you to write a letter to the editor and tell the voters of oos County.... YOU SIR, DO NOT HAVE THE GUTS TO DO THIS!!!!!

Steve Pickering wrote on Nov 22, 2009 7:29 PM:

13/31 is NOT being extended, now or later. The 6,000 foot number is the Worlds number, and like the World, my use of it may be incorrect, and I am not sure where it came from. The runway that is to be extended is the 4/22.

As to my candidacy, you have the right to vote for whoever you want. At this time Mrs. Whitty is not a candidate. We won't know who all the candidates are until March. She may or may not run. Instead of just talking, why not run yourself?

And finally as to the defeatist attitude of some posters. It is getting old. This is a deep water bay and at some point in the near future it will be developed for all its potential. You can’t stop it with negativism. A railroad and a larger airport are essential and it will happen. Get over the “If it doesn’t affect me right now today, I am not interested” attitude. If you are trying to preserve some pristine wilderness for your own edification, get over it. This was and will again be an industrial port. It is unstoppable, and can only be delayed

IWanttoknow wrote on Nov 22, 2009 6:46 PM:

Iwanttoknow why the airlines don't us the civilian aircraft that is Short, Landing, Takeoff (SLT) type. I don't know how many a C-130 can carry? Other than being a little cold and slow their not a bad ride. In my opinion. Their safety record must be somewhat reliable, so insurance should not be a problem. If not C-130 type bring back the super connies!! Just my opinion and I'M STICKIN' TO IT. BYE

The North Spit is where the airport should be. Look at all the talk of extending runways now when there isn't hardly any need for it nor any room to do it. Is anybody able to think about the future?

whatintheworld wrote on Nov 21, 2009 2:33 PM:

Dear candidate for every elected and appointed position ever created Pickering. On the maps published by OTH, a place where you apparently spend considerable time accomplishing little, 13/31 is more north south than 4/22. Of course, as a navigator having been trained to read a compass, something that you may not be, I do note that neither is north south. Please explain how 4/22 can be extended by 6000 additional feet without constructing a runway into the bay. Explain why when we cant fill 30 passenger aircraft we want to extend the runway to accomodate 200 passenger aircraft. And, while you are at it, please explain why we should vote out Whitty and you in. I finally understand why the World newspaper did not endorse any of your candidacies. And probably wont this time.

orecoast007 wrote on Nov 21, 2009 2:18 PM:

Steve,Let me be the first to say you are not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed either....and you are trying to get elected to the BOC!!! LOL! Take a look in the mirror sometime!!!!!

IWanttoknow wrote on Nov 21, 2009 1:24 PM:

Iwanttoknow: Why can a person change their plans without the paying agency changing theirs? Mr. Freeman had to pay back some of his (package?) for some reason(s) why not Mr. Letellier. Both of these gentlemen did their best with what they had to work with but that doesn't change the fact of Taxpayers dollars being spent (golden Parachute)for individuals betterment! Private business doing this for departing employees can be done if they are using their own funds. Not governments (unless they are creating a profit, other story). Just my opinion. Bye.

If Bandon Dunes wants bigger planes to bring their customers in from SF, that is exactly what will be done.

This Money Ball is already rollin folks.

Throw a few more millions of Other Peoples' Money, and there you are.

Where you are is two airports and no planes.

With the runway extending further out, and LNG coming, perhaps they're planning to put traffic signals in the Bay?

Uh oh,

Eastsider wrote on Nov 21, 2009 8:20 AM:

Lengthening 4/22 by 6,000 feet would put the SW end on the North Spit! Someone has their facts wrong.

Steve Pickering wrote on Nov 20, 2009 3:40 PM:

I am not sure Ms. Cook should get $103,000 either, but what does that have to do with the price of tickets? Airport District employee salaries do not affect the price of airline tickets at OTH. Another misinformed poster who doesn’t bother to learn the facts before posting. Next you’ll start whining about how much the Airport District Board is paid.

Steve Pickering wrote on Nov 20, 2009 2:27 PM:

Obama,

You need to reread the article. They are going to lengthen 4/22 by 6,000 feet, not a total of 6,000 feet. What has the board got to do with this? I am not now, or in the future, running for an Airport Board seat.

Get your facts correct before you attack.

barack obama wrote on Nov 20, 2009 1:24 PM:

By the way Steve.....You have no idea what you are talking about. Just because you go to the meetings doesn't mean that you would do a good job on the board. No one cares what you think.

Runway 4/22 at North Bend is over 5900 feet. We aren't getting jets anyways. There is no money in flying jets out of this po-dunk town. Turboprops are all you need.

Steve Pickering wrote on Nov 20, 2009 1:10 PM:

WhatInTheWorld,
In your zeal to attack you failed to do the research. The North/South Runway referred to in the article is the one that runs down the bay in a Northeasterly/Southwesterly direction (4/22). The runway you reference is the East/West Runway (13/31). Attend a few meetings and you would know this. It is a frequent subject of discussion.

When Bob More led the campaign to stop runway extension back in 1976, I wonder if he ever thought about the long term consequences? Not only did Hughes Air West pull out, we have since become more encumbered by regulations and now we are so deeply in debt that putting in needed tramsportation infrastructure is extremely hard to do.

The jet age started over 50 years ago but other than private jets, we don't see them coming here. They could have been here 30 years ago folks. Time passed and now we are stuck.

whatintheworld wrote on Nov 20, 2009 11:40 AM:

Part of this should be labeled more Letellier pipe dreams having been given no thought before speaking. Propably an appropriate farewell message. Coos County residents are not stupid. As any person, including the World reporter, who can read a map (aviators refer to them as charts) can see, the north south runway is approx 4,500 feet long. If you extended the runway into the bay (in the middle of the wood chip and LNG ship turn basin and extend it to Safeway's front door, there isn't the needed "MINIMUM OF 6,000 FEET" of useable runway. It would be unsafe to drop down over Safeway and end at the Virginia Avenue sidewalk. Enjoy the red Georgia mud Mr. Letellier.
