Fishermen missing near Heceta Head

Friday, November 20, 2009 |
YACHATS (AP) — Authorities are searching for two fishermen reported missing, possibly in the ocean, north of Heceta Head.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from North Bend searched at first light Thursday for 62-year-old Bill Bodewig of Yachats and 23-year-old Nick Lutz of Florence.
They had been fishing along the shoreline. The Coast Guard says searchers have found a fishing pole, two backpacks and a vehicle that belonged to one of the men.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a ground search for the men, but conditions Thursday were rough, with gusty winds and a big surf.
Bodewig was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black jacket. Lutz wore a camouflage jacket and hip waders.
