Community colleges group honors SOCC board member

The Oregon Community College Association has honored Southwestern Oregon Community College board Chairman David Bridgham.
The association recently named the Coos Bay man as its Howard Cherry Outstanding Community College Board Member of the Year, a press release said. The award is given to those who, by their contribution to the community college cause in Oregon, have brought recognition to community colleges statewide.
Southwestern Interim President Dr. Patty Scott said Bridgham’s recognition is long overdue.
“He is a passionate leader of community colleges and has worked hard to build the Bay Area community through his public service,” she said.
He’s served on the Southwestern Board of Education for 11 years and recently agreed to serve as chairman again to help the college transition through a leadership change.
During Bridgham’s board tenure, he has helped the college expand its educational services and increase opportunities for students, the press release said. Over those years, the board approved construction of the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute, Hales Center for the Performing Arts, Student Recreation Center, and expanded student housing to nearly 400.
The award is given each year in the name of the late Dr. Howard Cherry, a lifelong advocate for education and community involvement.
