The Southwestern Oregon Community College men’s cross country team finished last in the NWAACC Championships, with the women’s team running incomplete, but coach Dan Neal was encouraged.
“Our results don’t reflect how well our kids ran,”he said.
“We had several athletes get their best times of the season on the most difficult course we have run.”
Tyco Sedler led the men’s team, finishing 37th with a time of 28 minutes, 19 seconds for the 8,000-meter race, while Uriel Aguirre was 46th (28:52), Daniel Lawrence 60th (29:35), Andrew Nettlebeck 62nd (30:11), Emmanuel Urias 67th (32:42) and Sam Ramirez 68th (36:45).
The Laker men finished with a team score of 255. Spokane Community College won with 24 points, with Everett finishing second at 52, and Lane Community College third with 95 points.
Kendra Nelson finished 16th in the women’s 5,000-meter race, with a time of 19:59. Shontae Brown finished 44th at 23:05.
Everett upset Spokane, winning its first NWAACC women’s title with a team score of 23. Spokane finished second with 55 points, and Lane was third with 76 points.
Neal said the Lakers now will look forward to the spring.
“We had a long season with some of our athletes getting sick (and) some ran through injuries,” Neal said. “All the athletes will take some deserved time off and then start preparing for track season.”
Wrestlers have home duals
Southwestern’s wrestling team will host a pair of junior colleges in a double dual on the Lakers’ home mats Saturday.
Southwestern will wrestle West Hills and Lasson in the competition, which is scheduled to start at noon.
The Lakers won’t have another home match until January.
