COQUILLE — A judge sentenced a Coos County child sex-offender to three years in prison Tuesday morning after he pleaded guilty to child sex abuse-related charges.

John C. Hudson III pleaded guilty in Coos County Circuit Court to 10 counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse. In turn, Circuit Court Judge Michael Gillespie sentenced the 43-year-old to 18 months prison for each count.

Hudson will serve the first two sentences consecutively, while the rest will run concurrently. He also must serve three years of post-prison supervision.

Deputies took Hudson, who does not have a permanent residence, into custody at the hearing.

After a grand jury handed down an 11-page indictment, Senior Assistant Attorney General Michael Slauson prosecuted Hudson on 20 counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse and 20 counts of second-degree encouraging child sex abuse.

Hudson entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment in September. Then at a plea-change hearing last month, Hudson’s lawyer, Daniel Hinrichs, of Coos Bay, requested more time to review the case, before eventually taking a plea-deal.

Each of the first 20 counts could have carried a maximum sentence of 10 years with a $250,000 fine, while each of the remaining five-year sentences and a $125,000 fine.

Police arrested Hudson in September after an Oregon Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Child task force investigation, which targets predators who use the Internet to sexually exploit children. The charges are related to computers Hudson had, containing numerous pornographic pictures of minors.

Hudson fled to Bend after the charges were filed. Police tracked him to the Central Oregon city and arrested him.

Oh great, so in 3 years he'll be back on the street and abusing more kids. Next time it will be worse too because he will have learned new tricks. We should have much tougher laws and punishments for these people.
