Gold Beach will play at noon Saturday when the Panthers meet Vale in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A football playoffs.

The game starts at 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, which is the time zone Vale is in.

Two of the other three quarterfinal matchups also are Saturday. Defending state champion Grant Union plays Sunset Conference champion Cascade Christian at Spiegelberg Stadium in Medford at 1 p.m., while Rainier and Santiam Christian meet at 5 p.m. at Corvallis High School.

The other quarterfinal is Friday when Clatskanie visits Amity.

Gold Beach and Vale met for the state title in 2007, with the Panthers winning 42-0.

“Vale’s head coach is a good friend of mine,” Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said after the Panthers beat Willamina in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday. “He’s going to want to get even. I’m going to want to give him a chance.”

The Panthers were excited about the game, even though it means traveling by bus across the state.

“I’m very excited,” said Richard Wallace, who had two touchdown receptions in Saturday’s win. “I’m looking forward to a long trip to Vale.”

Gold Beach won by five points Saturday, while Vale dominated Jefferson. But the Panthers were mostly happy with how they played against Willamina.

“We’ve got stuff to fix, but we didn’t play horribly,” lineman Jack Lander said.

Gold Beach is the only South Coast team remaining in the playoffs.

Midwestern League champion Thurston hosts The Dalles Wahtonka on Friday in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs, while Churchill visits Jefferson.

In the Class 4A playoffs, Far West League champion Douglas meets Sweet Home on Saturday at Roseburg High School and runner-up Sutherlin visits Henley on Friday.

Admission for second-round and quarterfinal games is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
