The Oregon Human Trafficking Task Force and Support to Special Immigrant Population will offer training and background on the issue of human trafficking Wednesday at the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Independent Business Operations luncheon.
The lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Training will follow from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Both the lunch and the training will be at the Mill Casino-Hotel, 3201 Tremont Ave., in North Bend. The 11:30 a.m. program is free, however, lunch is $12.50. The training later in the afternoon costs $10 per person.
The program is sponsored by The Zonta Club of Coos Bay Area, partnering with the Coos County Commission on Children and Families.
Human trafficking is commercial exploitation, usually of women and children, for sexual or economic purposes through force or other forms of coercion, a press release said. Teenage runaways and “throw-aways” are especially vulnerable to human traffickers. Meth or other drugs can be used to recruit or control victims.
This is not just an urban problem, but it is a Coos County issue, a press release said. At risk on a given night, 20 homeless youth, either runaways or those abandoned by their parents, between the ages of 11 to 17 years (11 boys and nine girls), were identified in January 2009, during a one-night homeless survey in Coos County conducted by the Oregon Housing and Community Services.
