North Bend’s volleyball team will play for third place today at the Class 4A tournament in Eugene.
The Bulldogs won a five-set match with Astoria in the quarterfinals at Lane Community College on Friday, but then fell to Marist in the semifinals.
North Bend meets Cottage Grove at 2:15 p.m. today in the match for third.
While North Bend’s kids were understandably disappointed after entering the tournament with the No. 1 ranking, North Bend coach Les Willett was upbeat.
“I’m not displeased at all,” he said. “We’re playing some very good teams.”
In the opener, the Bulldogs edged Astoria 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-18, 15-11.
After a break, the Bulldogs were swept by Marist 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.
North Bend had an advantage late in the final two games.
“We just couldn’t hold the lead,” Willett said. “We just didn’t play as aggressively as we needed to.
“It’s not that we didn’t play hard. We just got a little tentative.”
Marist clinched the match with a stuff block.
“We went down swinging,” Willett said.
Alexandra Mateski finished the day with 31 kills, four blocks and 27 digs. Haley Dunham added 22 kills, two blocks, 43 digs and seven aces on jump serves. Justine Head had eight aces and 20 digs, while setter Katie Banta had 61 assists, 22 digs and five kills, all against Astoria. Kristin Banta had 10 kills and four blocks and Mallory Rose had seven kills. Libero Ashley Horlacher apparently was respected by both foes, who repeatedly hit away from her, and finished with 13 digs.
Marist will face Sisters in an all Sky-Em League final, while the Bulldogs face Cottage Grove, which shared the league title with the Spartans and Outlaws.
Willett hopes his team enjoys the match and the chance for a third-place trophy.
“It’s going to be fun,” he said.
Cottage Grove swept Newport in the quarterfinals Friday before losing in four games to Sisters in the semifinals.
The Outlaws swept Henley and Marist swept Banks in the other quarterfinal matches.
