Oregon Coast Community Action has been awarded more than $795,000 in funding to create an Early Head Start program in Coos and Curry counties.

The agency announced the program expansion will mean the agency will hire 13 employees and work with 52 more children from newborn to 3 years old.

Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based program for low-income families with infants and toddlers, and promotes healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women, the press release said.

The program will start in January 2010, with plans to train staff in December and provide services to all of the children by March. Some of the facilities for the infant care and toddler classrooms will be provided by Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Family Center.

South Coast Head Start runs nine sites throughout Coos and Curry counties.
