North Bend High School is sending its third swimmer on to a Division I program this decade.
Senior Rachel Heaney will sign a letter of intent Monday to compete for Boise State University.
Heaney’s signing ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the gymnasium lobby at the high school and is open to the public.
Heaney, who has won five individual state titles for the Bulldogs, made her decision after a recent visit to the Idaho campus.
“When I went there, they have everything I was looking for,” she said.
The school has a strong academic program, with advisors and tutors.
“They have a lot of people who want you to succeed,” she said.
Boise State also offers a strong nursing program, which fits Heaney’s goal of becoming a midwife.
And the Broncos have an emerging swimming program.
“Their team is up-and-coming,” Heaney said. “I want to be part of a program that is rising.”
Heaney also took trips to two other Western Athletic Conference schools — San Jose State University and the University of Nevada.
Her trip to the Reno campus came just before her decision to attend Boise State. Nevada had a beautiful campus and good coaches, she said, but just wasn’t the right fit.
“Boise had everything,” she said.
Boise State had one other drawing card, a chance to be teammates again with Denise Green, who will be a senior for the Broncos when Heaney is a freshman.
“I’m very excited about getting to spend time with Denise,” Heaney said. “She’s like my sister. I think she’ll be a good mentor for all the dos and don’ts of college life.”
Green holds two individual school records at Boise State and also is part of several relay teams that hold school records.
Green and Heaney followed in the footsteps of former North Bend and South Coast Aquatic Team standout Kim Jasmer, who also won multiple state titles for the Bulldogs before a successful career at the University of Washington.
In addition to finalizing her college plans and preparing for the upcoming high school season, which starts Dec. 1 with a home meet against Cottage Grove, Heaney also recently was honored as a Scholastic All-American in swimming for the second time.
The program for students in grades 10 through 12 is through USA Swimming, and athletes must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and achieve a junior national bonus time standard. Heaney is one of 22 Oregon swimmers to be honored this year.
