Third Republican set to race for governor

Two Republicans have formally filed for Oregon’s 2010 governor’s race, but a Gresham man plans to make it a three-man contest.
John Lim, 73, recently paid a visit to the South Coast on a fact-finding tour that reaffirmed his belief the economy will be the central issue in the election. He has been actively campaigning against a tax hike that will go before voters in January and says he would make promoting tourism a priority if elected.
“Why should businesses come to invest if we are asking for more taxes?” he asked.
He also suggested Oregon’s in need of a change in leadership. The state hasn’t had a Republican governor since 1987, when Victor Atiyeh left office. The challengers in next year’s Republican primary already include Michael Hotchkiss of Redmond and Allen Alley of Lake Oswego.
Lim said Alley, who made an unsuccessful bid for state treasurer last fall, is a good businessman, but doesn’t have the political experience he does. Lim has served four terms in the Oregon Legislature, most recently as a state representative. He lost a re-election bid last fall.
“You don’t have to train me,” he said.
The Democrats who have filed for the governor’s race include Bill Bradbury of Bandon, Roger Obrist of Damascus and Steve Shields of Corvallis.
