A North Bend oral surgeon is making a bid to try to unseat state Rep. Arnie Roblan in next year’s general election.

Dr. Scott Roberts announced Wednesday he will seek the Republican nomination for the Oregon House of Representatives’ ninth district. He pointed to tax increases, unsustainable state spending and land use regulations as reasons behind his decision.

“Our country was founded on a limited government, and I decided I needed to step up in our community and our area,” he said Wednesday.

The 42-year-old father of three has been practicing medicine in North Bend since 1998, having grown up in Phoenix, Ariz. He doesn’t have elected government experience, though he is president of the State Society of Oral and Maxillogfacial Surgeons.

If elected, he said he would be the only dentist in the state House of Representatives, offering an important viewpoint during health care discussions.

He first started thinking about entering politics in the run-up to the 2008 primaries. He found he disagreed with elected officials’ decisions. He considers his medical background an asset for any future health care reform discussions, though he is mostly concerned about tax hikes passed during the last legislative session. He has participated in Tea Party events and supports efforts to repeal tax increases with the special election in January.

“I’m nervous about the tax laws passed by the Oregon Legislature,” he said. “I think that is a big burden on small businesses.”

Roberts owns his practice and employs 10 people. In addition, he has a satellite office in Florence.

He decided to run for the Ninth District, in part, because it covers much of his clientele base. He also took issue with Roblan’s decisions during the past session.

“Mr. Roblan voted for every single tax bill that came through the Oregon Legislature,” he said. “We differ completely.”

What taxes need to be cut? What cuts will be made from the state's budget to pay for tax cuts? Can Roberts tell us?

Dear Somethoughts,

I'm one of those people who are OK with paying taxes and doing my part. HOWEVER, I am NOT OK with my tax dollars being wasted (latest report: $93BILLION dollars of gov't waste), I am NOT OK with my tax dollars bailing out failing private enterprises, or banks, or friends of politicians or presidents, or ACORN, or stupid and non-sensical pet projects, or a failing education system, etc., etc. But I suspect you're one of those people that my tax dollars support, so I don't expect you to understand private sector economics vs. government economics. In the private sector, we earn it. In the government sector, they print it.

What's interesting to me about the tea party movement is how it started. A small group of libertarians began this current movement. Then all of a sudden here comes FOX News. Now the movement is viewed as ignorant Fox propaganda. Now all the Republicans are running with very libertarian stances. The real question is whether the Republicans will actually do what they say they are going to do. Its one thing to say you're for limited government and its a whole other thing to actually mean it.

It's about time someone challenged Roblin! He may be a nice guy and a stand-up citizen, but that doesn't make you a good politician. He's as good a representative as he was a principal; not good! This will be refreshing to have someone who has our best interests in mind and not their own. Sometimes it takes someone from the outside looking in to get a fresh view of things.

I agree: Arnie Roblan is a great guy and terrific individual.

HOWEVER, he has spent his entire career living off other people's tax dollars and his track record is indicative of someone who has little understanding of how the private sector creates wealth - wealth that Salem and D.C. so eagerly collect and redistribute. Time for change.

Mr. E, it's time to stand for something, and not just the "gray area" where you don't have to take a position, ever...

Hiram1999 wrote on Nov 15, 2009 10:31 PM:

It's time to get behind Mr. Roberts. He's charismatic and Mr. Roblan is way to liberal. Mr. Roblan voted on EVERY tax increase that came before the legislature. Roblan was basically a tax and spend liberal, and has seriously damaged our state economy in terms of jobs, businesses, taxes, and even prospective businesses. He's been a disaster to the south coast.

Go Scott!! I know Dr Roberts to be an honest, trustworthy man who thinks options through and makes decisions based on those principles. I wouldn't consider his stand to be "far right" rather it is conservative with a bent toward Christian principles. Don't let inexperience sway your opinion of him.

The people who don't mind paying taxes are those who recognize a responsibility to contribute to the common good. I guess that would not be a "valid" counter-argument if you do not feel others are worthy of your contribution. You must be Darwinian. Survival of the fittest and all that.

Arnie is a rare commodity these day. He is as honest as the day is long and he has integrity. Re-elect Arnold Roblan.

BRAWNY JAMES DIO, South Coast Development Council is not bringing any jobs here either....and they are being paid with our tax dollars....

New faces to the political scene might do us some good....,I mean we can't do any worse......

DanInOregon wrote on Nov 12, 2009 3:01 PM:

The "silly tea party movement" is what real Americans call free speech. But as usual, liberals like many of the posters here cannot handle this because they do not have a valid counter-argument. All they can do is insult and denigrate. I personally cannot understand why anyone would want to pay more taxes unless they are a non-producer now and don't pay anything to start with.

DanInOregon wrote on Nov 12, 2009 2:53 PM:

Roblan is a tax and spend liberal. He needs to go. Dr. Roberts will better represent this area that does lean conservative. Roblan's plan to tax small business to death will only lead to more job losses.

somethoughts wrote on Nov 12, 2009 1:50 PM:

Hey, Brawny
I thought ditto heads want less government involvement. Why is the private sector not creating more jobs and promoting business? In our case the local Chamber can't even support itself without handouts from all our local government entities.

somethoughts wrote on Nov 12, 2009 1:43 PM:

It is amazing that a man smart enough to become a Dentist can actually be a Tea Partier. Or is this just another rich guy selling the "No Government" and "Trickle Down" theories to the poor ignorant masses.

Brawny James Dio wrote on Nov 12, 2009 1:31 PM:

I believe Dr. Roberts would be a fresh and welcomed represenative of this area. His statements regarding job creation and business support are just what this area needs. What has Roblan done to help our job situation? Nothing. What has Roblan done to promote business in this area? Nothing. Out with the old and ineffective.

Mr E wrote on Nov 12, 2009 12:38 PM:

I like Dr. Roberts as a man (and an oral surgeon), but he swings the pendulum too far right in his economic beliefs to garner my vote. I cannot get behind a candidate who was involved with the silly tea party movement, yet was curiously silent during the prior decade of unintelligent spending by our government.

Why can't we have something in between "a lot of taxes, a lot of waste" and "no taxes, no services"? It seems that the moderate candidate is all but extinct in American politics, particularly at local levels, and especially when it comes to economic policy.
