FAIRVIEW - It was Monday afternoon when Cindy Gisholt got a call from her 31-year-old daughter’s boss. Jayme Austin hadn’t shown up for her shift.

“I thought she was late to work because she got into a car accident,” Gisholt said. “She drives like a bat out of hell.”

But, upon returning to her Fairview home, she found Austin’s car parked safely in the driveway.

Inside, a heater continued to blow hot air, towels waited in a dryer, and Gisholt found Austin’s new Droid cell phone, abandoned.

“She wouldn’t go anywhere without it.”

Gisholt knew something was seriously wrong.

“As soon as I made the decision to call police, I knew someone took her,” she said.

Cars lined Gisholt’s driveway Wednesday afternoon. Standing on her front porch, surrounded by friends and family, she waited for any news of her missing daughter.

Since Monday, more than two dozen searchers have scoured mountainsides, river bottoms and the dense woodlands surrounding Fairview for any trace of the mother of two girls, ages 5 and 12.

“I just want my daughter home,” Gisholt said. “They just want their mom.”

Investigators have no idea what happened to Austin, Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said.

“I hope she’s alive. I always hope for the best in these things, but plan for the worst,” he said.

Police have not announced any leads, but they are treating Austin’s disappearance as a crime.

The investigation

The Coos County Major Crime Team arrived at Gisholt’s house Monday afternoon within 30 minutes of her call. Since then, the Coos County Search and Rescue Team, tracking dogs, the Coos County Mounted Posse, police, friends and family have searched the area.

Some have arrived at sunrise and searched past sunset.

The North Bend Dive team examined a nearby river and a pond on the Gisholt property. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter also flew over the area. As of this morning, they had found no trace of Austin, a Coos County District Attorney’s Office press release said.

Today, investigators are focused on talking to witnesses, and they’re asking the public to call with any information.

Austin’s ex-boyfriend, Jesse Rooke, is not a person of interest in the disappearance, Frasier said. Acquaintances told police the man has been on a fishing boat out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, since at least Nov. 8. No one has been able to contact Rooke’s boat, Frasier said, but the man’s involvement seems unlikely.

“If he’s on that boat, then he doesn’t have anything to do with this,” the DA said.

The World’s archives say police arrested Rooke on a domestic assault charge in Fairview in November 2005.

“There have been domestic violence incidents between the two in the past,” Frasier said.

There are also reports that Austin had a stalker, who a few months ago hacked into her e-mail, voice mail and MySpace account. But the problem seemed to go away after Austin changed her numbers and personal account information, Gisholt said.

Disappearing is out of character for Austin, who has held a job with Oregon Satellite for two years, the DA said.

Her family told investigators that she occasionally disappeared for a day or two in the past, when she was using methamphetamine. But Austin overcame her addiction a couple of years ago, Frasier said.

“It’s hard to come back from drug problems, but she did,” Gisholt said.

Dedicated worker

Sandi Woodworth, Oregon Satellite’s Coos Bay store manager, described Austin as her right-hand person.

“If I needed anything done, she was right there to do it for  me,” Woodworth said. “She’s just a friendly, outgoing person.”

On Monday, Austin called Woodworth, the last person to speak with her, to say she was having well troubles and would be late to work. She planned to shower at her mom’s house, two doors down.

“She’d been having trouble with her water prior,” Woodworth said.

Woodworth said she’s been sick to her stomach since then. She can’t eat and can barely sleep.

“I’m checking and double checking the locks because it’s so out of the blue,” Woodworth said.

As search crews combed through the woods Wednesday, friends and family comforted and hugged Gisholt. Visiting children swung on a play set in front yard. Gisholt kept a straight face and an even voice as she discussed her daughter’s disappearance.

“We have hope,” Gisholt said. “We are holding on to our hope. We will find her.”
Unsolved crimes

The Gisholt property in Fairview is not far from where the body of murdered Coquille teenager Leah Freeman was found in August 2000.

The 15-year-old disappeared the night of June 28, 2000. A searcher discovered Leah’s body off the side of Lee Valley Road on a wooded slope by a creek more than month later. The site is several miles from Fairview Road.

Police have not solved the crime.

I just read where they made an arrest. And i cannot get this to post on that article so Im posting here in hopes that I may be of help. My husbands friend and I were traveling up Middle Creek where my husband was setting up Elk camp Monday morning at 10:55 at the 8 mile bridge and a a speeding car came flying down, If we hadnt crossed the bridge at the time we had, The person would have hit us head on!! Most people use CB's traveling up and down the Middle because of logging..This fool in a black smaller sized car was in a big hurry. I drive a small black VW and my friend and I were surprised at how fast that car was going being a very small dangerous road. If anyone wants to talk to me, use my email on here...Im just wondering if the black speeding car was involved?

Nancy Grace had it on again last night with new info, once she has something going like Jayme's case, she usually follows it through, so please continue to watch her show. I pray for a good outcome to this and also for Jayme and her family, my God Bless you all.

amber alerts are only for children, see below:
AMBER Alert Criteria
1.Law enforcement officials have a reasonable belief that an abduction has occurred.
2. Law enforcement officials believe that the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.
3.Enough descriptive information exists about the victim and the abductor for law enforcement to issue an AMBER Alert.
4. The victim of the abduction is a child age 17 years or younger.
5. The child’s name and other critical data elements—including the child abduction (CA) and AMBER Alert (AA) flags—have been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system.

do you even know what an Amber Alert is?
It is a Child Abduction Emergency and Alert Bulletin, not for adults

I really hope that Jayme is found safe.. My prayers go out to this family..

NB_Rez wrote on Nov 12, 2009 2:56 PM:

Why does it need to be reported that she was a previous drug addict or that she was a past victim of domestic violence if niether of these have anything to do with her being missing? Does her dirty laundry really need to be aired for the world to see? These articles need to focus on facts that will help her be found and not the skeletons she has in her closet.

mary juana wrote on Nov 12, 2009 2:41 PM:

Jayme's father Rick is actually here now and out looking. He has been searching since coming to town. He is searching different areas as well.
Our prayers go out to all of Jayme's family and friends. There are a lot of rumors and people calling and texting family members about rumors they've heard. People...if you don't know the facts, please don't text or call with info. Some immediate family members are very upset over this, rightfully so. There are poster being put up today!! If everyone will read these stories and post it to their facebook or send it via email, it might help!! Some of her family in other towns are staying up to date via these postings.

My heart goes out to all family members of these missing and murdered victims: Jeremy, Leah and now Jayme. This story should be in BIG print, in FULL color taking up the WHOLE FRONT page of The World Newspaper!!! Help find Jayme for her kids, mom and dad and friends. Hold a press conference to get the word out. What about an AMBER ALERT across Oregon and into California???!!!! The press needs to do what it can for this family.

God Bless

The water was not working b/c of well problems.

I didn't get to see the Nancy Grace show last night, but hopefully Nancy will stay on this? and shine some light on Leah's and Jeremy's case as well - we need to find Jayme safe if we can, and solve Leah and Jeremy's (anothers....) cases once and for all.

jeshan wrote on Nov 12, 2009 12:52 PM:

While my sentiments are with the Gisholt family. Sentiments also need to go out to Jayme's father who lives in another city. He has been woefully negleted in these stories.

ohsolizz wrote on Nov 12, 2009 12:48 PM:

I'm continuing to pary for the Gisholt/Austin family, I hope Jayme comes home safely soon.

I'm also wondering why the heck isn't this story bigger in Oregon news papers/ the news? This poor girl went missing under very suspicious circumstances and the RegGuard, Oregonian, and News channels are giving the story the smallest mentioning possible. It makes me sick that these vital and potentially lifesaving medias would rather cover garbage and promote gossiping than use their power to help find this girl!

loventhecoast wrote on Nov 12, 2009 12:16 PM:

First off my heart goes out to everyone connected with Jayme.
Now, after reading the story in the paper... she stated her water was not working. Then it mentioned a possible stalker. Has anyone checked to see WHY the water did not work? Does it look like someone turned it off on their own? and then maybe followed her to her destination?
I pray that she comes home safe to her children and family members.

JT wrote on Nov 12, 2009 10:51 AM:

Funny... Some of the info in this article, and some of the info that Cindy gave on Nancy Grace last night don't match up. I assume this is a timing issue???

DB wrote on Nov 12, 2009 10:27 AM:

I pray that she is found safely. Sounds like she made quite a turn around in her life. My heart goes out to the family and most certainly her children. Not knowing is the hardest - I know - I've waited to hear for over 23 years.... Jeremy's Mom
