Richard D. “Dick” Francis

A celebration of life will be held for Richard D. “Dick” Francis, 83, of Coos Bay, at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Coos Bay Eagles Lodge, 568 S. Second Ave., Coos Bay. Cremation rites were held under the direction of Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary.
Dick was born April 10, 1926, at Eatonville, Wash., the son of Gomer James and Margaret (McTee) Francis. He died Nov. 8, 2009, in Coos Bay.
He was raised and educated in Western Washington gaining a degree from the “school of hard knocks.” He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart while serving in the South Pacific. After the war he was a logger and a commercial fisherman logging and fishing in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California. He was married to Carolyn G. Sheld on April 10, 1964, in Hemet, Calif.
Dick was a member of the Order of the Purple Heart, and the Disables American Veterans. He loved horses, hunting, fishing, camping and working with leather.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carolyn Francis of Coos Bay; son, Jim Francis of Brennan, Wash.; daughter, Kendra and Glen McCasland of Charleston; daughters, Dorothy Sims of Salem and Cindy and Matt Alumbaugh of Vashon Island, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Larry Miller of Sutherlin, Mike Mueller of Glide and Pat Mueller of Roseburg; sisters, Jean Hadley of Bowie, Texas, Margie Collins of Rice Hill and Loretta VanCleve of Oatman of Ariz.
He was preceded in death two sons, Frank Dick and Michael Francis; brother, Jeff Miller; and a sister, Joann Byrd.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.
