A viewing will be held for Barbara “Barb” Jean James, 79, of Bandon, from 1 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, at Amling Schroeder Funeral Home in Bandon. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at the IOOF Cemetery in Bandon. A celebration of life potluck will be held immediately following at the Veterans Hall on Bates Road.
Barb was born May 1, 1930, in Venita, to Glenn and Mildred Smith. She died Nov. 8, 2009, surrounded by her loving family, after a short battle with cancer.
She spent most of her life in Bandon, where she was known by everyone to be an incredibly giving and loving woman. She raised a family of wonderful children, Glenna Cravey of Crescent City, Calif., Ron Holland of Coos Bay, Stanley and Sandy Goodell of Grants Pass, Lori James of Bandon, and Rebecca James (Roosevelt) of Portland.
Barb enjoyed her yard and was appreciative of her friend, Joe Lively, who helped take care of it for many years and Sue Vest, caregiver and friend. She was loved by so many people. During the last two months of her life, there wasn’t an hour that went by that she didn’t receive a phone call or visit from her family and friends. During her last days she had a smile on her face, a great sense of humor and a kind word for everyone that came to see her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and she leaves all of them with so many wonderful memories.
Those who knew Barb, remember her smile, her charisma and how much she so loved her family including her sisters, Virginia Walls of Yoncalla, Nita and Mike O’Grady of Coos Bay and brother, Donald and Darlene Smith of Cottage Grove.
Barb was a loving grandmother to Kelly Schellong of Crescent City, David Schellong of Bandon, Tim Holland of Pennsylvania, Sarah Holland of Salem, Chelsea and Trevor Lee of Snohomish, Wash., Robert Coyle of Coos Bay, Alisha Shook of Portland, Alexanderia Shook of Portland, Chelle Rock of Bandon, and Christina and Marissa Barretta of Fresno, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Darlene Nelson; sons, Allan Goodell and Mike James; great-grandson, Jayvion Griffith; and lifelong partner, Wesley Huitt.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the local hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service, Bandon, 347-2907.
