North Bend’s girls soccer team beat Sweet Home 3-2 to reach the second round of the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A playoffs.

The win was just the second playoff victory in program history for North Bend, which visits Gladstone in a second-round match on Tuesday.

“Obviously, we’re excited,” North Bend coach Dustin Hood said. “The girls were really loose today. I thought we were in for something special and they provided.”

The bulldogs took a 3-0 lead over the Huskies and then held on in the final minutes.

“It was a wild finish there,” Hood said. “We had a couple opportunities. They had a couple opportunities.

“The last play of the game was a melee in front of the goal. Anna (Houghton) came through and put a mitt on it and hauled it in. She had some beautiful saves today.”

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 11th minute, when Nicole Medford scored off an assist by Taylor Cribbins. Medford scored again just before halftime off an assist by Caitlin McCullough.

North Bend went up 3-0 in the 50th minute, when Cribbins assisted on a goal by Brooke Davison.

But Sweet Home got right back in the match with goals by Jessica Snow in the 54th minute and Megan Rubindoux in the 57th.

Hood said Medford and Cribbins had strong matches at forward, while Davison stood out at wing and Dana Crosby played great on defense.

“Dana Crosby cleared three sure goals,” he said. “She played great.”

Things get much tougher on Tuesday.

Gladstone is 13-0-1 on the season and has recorded seven straight shutouts. For the season, the Gladiators have scored 51 goals and given up three.

“Sweet Home was a good team,” Hood said. “They had some quickness.

“Obviously, Gladstone is going to be a different story.”

One plus Tuesday will be the playing surface on the pitch at Gladstone.

“They play on turf, so we’re familiar with that,” Hood said.
