The city of Coos Bay has scheduled a special council meeting Tuesday to decide who should manage City Hall.

The council will consider whether to hire an interim city manager from a list of candidates compiled by the League of Oregon Cities, ask former interim city manager Chuck Knight to come back or keep Rodger Craddock as the interim manager, according to the meeting notice.

Craddock, who normally serves as the city’s police chief, has managed the city since the council fired Chuck Freeman on Sept. 23. The city paid Freeman $123,932 in a severance package that included eight-months salary, eight-months benefits and unused vacation and sick time. But some of that money will be coming back soon.

Freeman recently took a job as manager of the Kennewick Irrigation District in Kennewick, Wash., which is providing him health benefits. So he’s been sent an invoice to return seven month’s worth of health, dental and life insurance, and long-term disability benefits, totaling $10,189, Craddock said.

Good day everyone, I would like to see the World print political cartoons. Not national, but local. Could you just imagine where this crowd could take it?

I had a good laugh Amadumas, the main reason I didn't respond to your dribble about neighbor against neighbor is just that ... IT WAS DRIBBLE..Not worth the brain cell you thought you had to make the comment. As far as Mr F doing a good job, he was doing what he could for this sleepy little town that doesnt want to move forward but wants to hug each other and sing campfire songs.. I hope he does well and I pity the next one that comes in and tries to move things in a different direction other than STAGNANT. (did I spell ok for you this time?)

amadeus wrote on Nov 12, 2009 9:25 AM:

Hey, A. J., I also find it interesting that the protestethness was over the resigning, not the "I will do a crappy job. I will turn neighbor against neighbor. I will make stupid decisions"...maybe you DO have a sense of humor after all.. and it is spelled : "North" not "Nohrt"...Hey, I know, could you talk your spelling guy into being my reading guy?

amadeus wrote on Nov 12, 2009 9:21 AM:

me thinks someone protesteth too much... sigh...i never said he resigned, I only promised that I would...

Action Jackson wrote on Nov 11, 2009 7:32 PM:

Hey Norht Bend Guy::: First off please get the whole story before commenting on it. Maybe you and AMADEUS are related.
1. I know for a fact that Mr Freeman didnt tell the Mayor to "not F with him" just out of the blue or if at all. See I have followed the story and there was a reason that Mr. F was looking for another job. Mr. Mclown was not following the Cities charter. GET YOUR FACTS.
2. Who should we really believe, the news reporter who cant use spell check? The same reporter who continually states Mr F is from Airport Heights (sorry thats in North Bend, right?. The same reporter who works for the editor of this paper who is so one sided? Mclown sided!
As for Amadeus.... Who resigned? You probably cant even read. Try actually reading or getting some one to read to you what has been going on before you try to get involved.

Just the way Mr. Freeman wanted it to be North Bend Guy. Did he say "Gotcha" when he heard those words?dtnbd

North Bend Guy wrote on Nov 11, 2009 3:39 PM:

People, do you think that there was any other alternative for the Mayor but to fire an employee who threatened him and told him not to F**K with him? Jeez if this person worked for me they would be fired on the spot.

Steve Pickering wrote on Nov 11, 2009 10:11 AM:

Coos Bay has a Council Manager system. The Council and Mayor are elected unpaid volunteers who provide policy to the Manager who is paid (well). In other cities the Mayor is the city manager and he is paid. Sometimes the Council is paid also, but mostly elected.

Now as to finding a new City Manager. I was at that meeting Tuesday night, and my opinion is they are stalling until the voters get over the sting of Chuck’s firing. They don’t want to add to the cost by hiring another manager right away. Besides the election is a year away and often voters have short memories.

fern wrote on Nov 11, 2009 12:10 AM:

Did Steve Pickering apply? He knows everything already and would need no votes.

IWanttoknow wrote on Nov 10, 2009 6:57 PM:

IWanttoknow: Why don't we elect a City Manager (Kinda like County Assessor, Sheriff) Past County Assessor told the County Commissioners that he was the 'boss' not them, yet the Commissioners got their way (I think). We have a large enough talent pool here in 'River City' to select a person that the voters would elect. Plan B: Hire from this Talent Pool, extended it beyond City Limits, and hire local. At least in Plan B the person will be at home with the severance package. Just........Bye.

Eastsider wrote on Nov 10, 2009 1:04 PM:

Our Mayor and City Council are sort of like the people who run the Cleveland Browns or the Detroit Lions. To validate their own incompetence, they will hire a likewise incompetent manager, someone who can take the fall when they mess things up. Brace yourself for another train wreck. Things won't change until we have better canidates at election time.

Carefree highway wrote on Nov 10, 2009 11:19 AM:

I agree with Just An Observer. Let's just put everything on the mayor and council. If we don't like what they do get rid of them or maybe we could be the first city in the U.S. to hire a monkey to be city manager. It might help bring tourist to the coast.

dan milburn wrote on Nov 10, 2009 8:52 AM:

Here we are again. Same poop different day. Lessons repeat themself until learned and seeings how nothing has changed in the Coos Bay political front since we last visited this fiasco - my bet is we'll be getting more of the same old poop. I said then, and I say again that Jeff Mckeown would be the best choice for City Manager. He has all the experience you could find or hope for here. Let one of the council members fill in for Mayor until a new election can happen. Jeff could turn this fiasco into an opertunity for Coos Bay to be a success story. The right man in the right position is a simple solution to a complex problem. Draft Jeff McKeown. Albert Einstein once said, "I don't understand why matching socks is important to somebody". But his genious was in other fields.

Just An Observer wrote on Nov 9, 2009 11:10 PM:

Why even have a city manager? Let the department heads report to the mayor and city council. Save the city $100K a year and let those who were elected actually run things. If they screw up bad enough they will get recalled. If they do good they will get re-elected. At least we the people will know who is accountable and not have to pay out the big bucks for salaries and golden parachutes when the inevitable wrangling over who runs what comes along. Let all the debate play out in public meetings with executive sessions being held only when legally mandated to get some tranparency in how the city is being governed.

Coos County has no manager, just three commissioners. Why do our cities need these high priced folks?

Citizen wrote on Nov 9, 2009 6:00 PM:

I know who we can hire... Anyone that wants to fix this mess. The only problem is that darn brick wall they'll face when dealing with the local power structure. I am going to vote everyone out of office. To just be throwing away city managers like we do tells us just how out of touch with reality we are. I meant to say "we."

cc wrote on Nov 9, 2009 4:24 PM:

No please hire me.. I won't know what I am doing either but with the benefits package I will fake it or hire "Amadeus" to advise me..

orecoast007 wrote on Nov 9, 2009 3:32 PM:

I say hire Steve Pickering as City Manager (Coos Bay)... since he attends "ALL" city council meetings.. I mean how much more worse can Coos Bay do... (LOL) He wants to be involved with something so bad that he runs for every office he can... I think he wants to help himself and "NOT" anyone else....He claims to be change,he will be like the rest of them.. I bet this is not posted by 5PM today............

amadeus wrote on Nov 9, 2009 2:35 PM:

please please please please PLEASE hire ME. I will do a crappy job. I will turn neighbor against neighbor. I will make stupid decisions and then resign. I really NEED that hundred thousand dollar severence package.

Just Me wrote on Nov 9, 2009 12:56 PM:

Who in their right mind would ever want to get wrapped up in this mess? I will tell you who, someone NOT in their right mind!

Mark Smith wrote on Nov 9, 2009 11:54 AM:

It's important to have the golden parachute completely spelled out as whoever takes this job will definitely get fired and be better off for it.

I would ask for 1 years severance and a 2 year car allowance after termination. This should piss of local taxpayers when it happens
