Matthew Gary Ramey

A memorial service will be held for Matthew Gary Ramey, 43, of St. Helens at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at the Port Orford Christian Center in Port Orford. Graveside services will follow at the Port Orford Cemetery.
Matt was born May 1, 1966, in Eugene at Sacred Heart Hospital to Gary and Beverly Ramey. He died at his home in St. Helens on Nov. 2, 2009, of natural causes.
Matt was the first May Day baby born at the hospital that year. He had an older brother, Jeff, and a younger sister, Pam. He attended elementary schools in Klamath Falls, Coos Bay and Coquille. He graduated from Coquille High School in 1984. While in high school, he achieved many awards for excellence in music. He was chosen for the John Phillips Sousa award his senior year as a percussionist. Matt had the talent to be able to sit down and play guitar and piano without training. He had a wonderful sense of timing and understood the beauty of many kinds of music.
When Matt was a young man he belonged to 4-H and trained dogs. He qualified to go to the Oregon State Fair with his Brittany spaniel, Boomer. Matt was a volunteer fireman when he lived in Coquille.
Matt was the funniest storyteller, doing dialects to fit the story. He could keep you in stitches. He was fun to be around. He was an excellent cook and loved cooking huge breakfasts for people that might drop in. He loved to be the camp cook on hunting trips. He loved fishing on the Columbia River with friends. He was Little League baseball coach and T-ball coach and mentored many children. He loved kids. He had that uncanny ability to make people feel comfortable. He was loved by many.
The love of his life was his daughter, Jenna. He lived his life for her and through her. She was his inspiration. They camped, fished, gardened, cooked, did homework together, looked at the stars and laughed together. He would have lunch with her at school and he was so proud of her scholastic abilities. She was his life. He will be missed tremendously by those that loved him and those that he befriended.
He is survived by his daughter, Jenna Ramey, St. Helens. His parents Gary and Beverly Ramey, Coquille. His brother, Jeff
Ramey, St. Helens. His sister Pam and husband Bill Shadbolt, Bandon. Great uncle, Grant Ramey, McKinleyville, Calif. Great aunt, Caroline Jamieson, Longview, WA. Uncles and aunts, Butch and Leslie Ramey, Meadview, Ariz.; Don and Sharon McMichael, North Bend; Cousins, Betty Purcell, Teri Amiri, Kyle McMichael and Kelly Simones.
He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Sue and Ab Ramey and Hazel and Marion Wilson.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice. Services are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service, 396-3158.
