Don't like prices? Vote with your gas tank

Local gas stations have the right to charge anything they want for fuel. They have no need to get together to fix prices as the price signs are information for other stations.

They operate by charging “what the traffic will bear,” meaning, they charge as much as they can without driving us to drive elsewhere for fuel. What can you do? Find where the price is lowest and try to only buy there. Never fill up here. Buy as little as you can get by with until you are near your station again. If you go out of town, be sure to fill up on your way home. Creswell is good.

Merchants have the right to charge whatever they want for their goods. We have the right to not buy from them. If everyone in the community were to keep fuel tanks below half-full we would send a message.

While I agree that the gas prices in Coos Bay are ridiculous, driving to Reedsport will not save you money unless you are headed that way anyway. If your car gets 25mpg you'll use 2 gallons of gas to drive up and back - that will be around $5.50. If you arrive there on empty and fill up a 15 gallon tank, you'll save about $4.50, since the prices are usually about 30 cents different, for a net loss of $1.00. You are correct that people passing through would do much better to wait until they get to another community to fill up.

Ron, You are right on. I often talk to people who complain about prices of gas here. I tell them to boycott our stations. If you want to see the prices go down , don't complain, take a drive to Reedsport and fill up there. If enough people start doing that, you will see the prices in this monopoly market adjust to the rest of the area.
