BANDON — For twins, Karli and Kacy Crook have a lot of differences.
The Bandon seniors and fraternal twins contrast in many ways.
Karli, who is seven minutes older, is more organized and punctual.
“She’ll wake up earlier than me,” Kacy said. “Without her, I’d probably be late all the time.”
Karli is better at math, while Kacy is better at English. They both like art, but Karli is more linear, and prefers drawing, while Kacy likes to paint.
Kacy has a sense of adventure, while Karli likes security. That’s why she’s pretty sure she wants to attend the University of Oregon, with its familiar surroundings, and Kacy is interested in St. Mary’s College in Northern California and Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
“She likes stability; I like adventure,” Kacy said.
They like similar foods, but in some instances only because Kacy’s gotten Karli to try things she likes, such as spicier items, or even coffee.
Kacy is left-handed and Karli is right-handed.
Karli’s hair is a little darker, and she swears Kacy is a little shorter.
“I’m 5-6,” Karli said. “Kacy thinks she’s 5-6, but she’s really like 5-5 1⁄2.”
“It’s kind of like we’re opposites,” Kacy said. “We balance each other out.”
The good news for Bandon coach Courtney Freitag is both sisters love volleyball.
“They are fun to have on the team,” Freitag said.
The twins are a big part of the reason Bandon is in the playoffs for the first time in several seasons, with a match at Sheridan on Saturday, even if they’re different on the court, just like they are off it.
Karli is an outside hitter, while Kacy has more of a role as a defensive specialist.
Karli is a co-captain, but more reserved. Kacy is a team leader without the captain title.
“She is absolutely the heart of the team,” Freitag said.
Kacy likes to be a vocal leader.
“I have to get everybody pumped up,” she said.
Karli’s on-court demeanor is a big contrast to her sister.
“I just like to focus on my game,” Karli said. “She’s a motivational speaker. I’m more of a stay-at-my-own-pace (person).”
Kacy likes to hit, but she’s more than happy to leave that up to her sister, as well as teammates Grace Garrett and Jennifer Torres. And she doesn’t mind if they get all the attention for their efforts.
“Defensive players typically don’t get the recognition,” Freitag said. “That doesn’t bother her. That’s what’s so cool about Kacy.”
“She gets a lot of stats, but that’s OK,” Kacy said of her sister. “I feel like I’ve found my place on the team and she’s found hers. We each do our own important parts.”
During Tuesday’s Sunset conference playoff win over Coquille, Karli had 13 kills, while Kacy had just a couple. But on two of Karli’s kills, Kacy provided the set, rather than regular setter Kelsey Hinojosa, and the sisters celebrated together after each point.
“She says that I’m the only one who can set her a perfect set,” Kacy said, adding that she likes to see her sister excel. “I’m very happy that she’s getting all those kills. She’d better get all those kills.”
Freitag has formed a special bond with the twins and the other two seniors, Hinojosa and Torres, because she first was an assistant coach when they were freshmen and they’ve come up through the program together.
Through the years, she’s gotten to know the twins well.
“For them being twins, they are two totally different chicks,” Freitag said.
For all those differences, though, they’re remarkably close.
They share a car, have lockers next to each other and eat lunch together every day.
They also grew up sharing a room until their older sister, Kalayna, graduated from high school. Kalayna also was an undersized outside hitter in volleyball, and Karli took her number when the twins reached high school.
They both played basketball until eighth grade, then gave up the sport.
And like their older sister, they both participate in track, though in different events. Karli likes the hurdles, the long jump, the short relay and the javelin. Kacy prefers the high jump, the 400 meters and the long relay.
They like the same music and have the same sense of humor.
“We’ll laugh at the same things for hours, much to the annoyance of our classmates and adults,” Kacy said.
And they love to argue with each other.
“We argue all the time, over everything,” Karli said. “We’re both really hard-headed and stubborn.”
All in all, though, they’re good for Bandon in volleyball and good for each other.
“I guess we’re just each other’s best friend,” Kacy said.
