Cory Dorland made an offer that John Bain and John Soukup just couldn’t refuse.

At least that is how Southwest Physical Therapy’s two newest physical therapists feel about the situation. Bain, who relocated from California, joined the therapy center about two years ago. Soukup, a Kansas City transplant, is a little newer, having joined the team about two weeks ago.

The therapy center, where Dorland is the business manager, offers Bain and Soukup a chance to work at a therapist-owned center. Soukup explained that many therapy centers are generally operated by a health system or hospital.

Here, “there is not a CEO talking about the bottom line,” he said.

In addition to Dorland’s employment offer, both men were looking to relocate to the coast. Bain said his wife had family in the Corvallis area and when opportunity arose, they decided to take it.

Soukup was attracted to something else the South Coast has to offer.

“I’m a golfer,” he said. “And about nine years ago I heard about Bandon Dunes.”

Soukup and his wife took a trip to the area and they were sold on the South Coast. They sold their house in Kansas City in three weeks and were officially relocating.

Each therapist brings more than 20 years experience to the center. Soukup originally was on the path to study medicine, majoring as pre-med. However, he was at a college kegger when a friend started talking about physical therapy.

Soukup was interested and volunteered at a clinic. The rest fell in place.

“I love the clinical side of it, working with people,” he said.

Bain’s interest in the profession started by watching his mother, a nurse, help others. Her medical books piqued his interest.

His journey started when two positions opened up at his local hospital. One position was in the pharmacy, the other in physical therapy.

“I didn’t get the pharmacy position,” Bain said.

At Southwest Physical Therapy and John Breuer Rehabilitation Services, Bain said he gets to work the different aspects of the field, with traditional clinical outpatient work and seeing home health clients.
