The Powers volleyball team had a short stay in the Class 1A playoffs, falling in three sets to host Southwest Christian on Wednesday, 25-23, 25-15, 25-18.
“The first set we came out really strong,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “We had a big crowd there. A rooter’s bus came up with 30 kids. We were feeling the energy of a playoff game.”
But the Wildcats prevailed in the opening game and the Cruisers never recovered.
“We just sort of fell off the train after that,” Rector said, adding that the Cruisers struggled to put together any offense and made a lot of errors.
“It wasn’t our best match for sure,” she said.
Leeanna Sears had four kills and 12 digs for the Cruisers. Liz Linderman had three kills and seven digs.
The Cruisers placed third in the Skyline League and also in the league tournament to reach the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
Southwest Christian advances to face Jewell in a second-round match on Saturday.
“Overall, we had a great season, but not so much tonight,”Rector said. “The girls did play with a lot of heart and hopefully learned a lot tonight.”
Bruins fall
Brookings-Harbor, the third-place team from the Far West League, was knocked out of the playoffs by host Banks on Wednesday. The Braves edged the Bruins 25-21, 13-25, 25-19, 25-23.
Banks will move on to face Greater Oregon League champion Baker on Saturday.
NB to face Estacada
North Bend learned Wednesday night that its foe in the playoffs on Saturday will be Estacada.
The Rangers, who met the Bulldogs a few times in the state tournament earlier this decade, beat Phoenix on Wednesday in a first-round match.
The winner of Saturday’s second-round match at North Bend will advance to the state tournament in Eugene.
The match is scheduled for 7 p.m., with admission set at $6 for adults and $4 for students.
North Bend beat Estacada for the state title in 2006. A year earlier, the Rangers topped the Bulldogs in the championship match.
Devils learn foe
Coquille will play Portland Adventist in the Class 3A playoffs Saturday.
The match is set for 6 p.m.
The Cougars swept Lewis & Clark regular-season champion Catlin Gabel in that league’s playoffs on Wednesday.
The winner of Saturday’s match reaches the Class 3A tournament.
