A surfer finishes his ride off of Bastendorff Beach early Wednesday afternoon near Charleston. There were several surfers out looking for waves shortly before the winds picked up and fog rolled in from the south.
Batten down the hatches and check those mooring lines. Head to Shore Acres State Park, not the beaches, to watch the big surf rolling in. Forecasters say a big storm’s on the way.
On Wednesday, they were busy sending out notices:
• There’s a high wind warning in effect until 10 tonight.
• There’s a high surf advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.
• There’s a high surf warning in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Sunday.
According to a notice from the National Weather Service office in Medford, the advisory targets the South Central Oregon and Curry coasts, including the cities of Coos Bay, North Bend, Reedsport, Coquille, Brookings, Harbor and Gold Beach.
Weather forecasters are advising South Coast residents to be cautious near the ocean this weekend. This is the time when sneaker waves are at their worst.
The expected heavy surf will be driven by a west to northwest swell, the advisory said. Breaker heights will initially be about 20 feet on Friday morning, but will build rapidly to nearly 35 feet that evening. Breakers should subside to around 30 feet Saturday night and to 25 of Sunday, the notice states. The heaviest surf will be on west to northwest facing coastlines.
People are urged to avoid jetties and other exposed structures as they will likely be inundated by the surf. It will also make exposed beaches potentially dangerous as well. Rip currents and localized beach erosion are likely.
That said, rain’s on the way, too, all the way through Veterans Day on Wednesday.

Orecoast007: Other tourist communities have family wage jobs. Why? Because they are UNION. Familiy wage jobs have to do with whether or not the workers are organized, not what kind of work they do. We see wood products jobs here no longer paying "family wage". SCDC is anti-union and as such will never bring "family wage" jobs to this community. By the way, surf's up and I'm headed for the beach!
