A farewell gathering will be held for Beverly Ann (Pugh) Conway, 77, of Coos Bay, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3355 Virginia Ave. in North Bend to thank her for her loving support and bless her onward journey. A potluck reception will follow. A private family interment will be held at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
Beverly was born April 9, 1932, in Dickinson, N.D., to Thomas Douglas Pugh and Vernice Opal (Mercer) Pugh. She died Nov. 1, 2009, in Coos Bay.
The family followed the dust bowl migration to Eugene in 1937, and then to Portland the next year after the death of her mother. Beverly was vice president of the Sons of the Pioneers fan club at Lincoln High in Portland and met her future husband, Leo Arnold Conway, at a radio station where he played steel guitar. They married in October 1950.
The mother of seven children, she took the calculus finals for her teaching degree at PSU while in labor with the last child. She taught at Woodmere and Redland elementary schools after graduation. She moved to Coos Bay in 1971 after divorcing, and taught for many years at Sunset and Blossom Gulch schools. Loving to help people, she worked as a Walmart greeter after retirement, until rheumatoid arthritis kept her from standing.
Bev spent many years in local theater at Little Theatre On the Bay, the On Broadway and Sawdust Theater. She loved to garden and her son and caregiver, Leo Jr., surrounded her house with beautiful potted flowers that she could enjoy from her wheelchair. She had an open heart and offered her home and ear to all that came to her in need of help.
Bev is survived by her sister, Sharon Pugh and husband, B.K. Sharma of Bloomington, Ind.; daughters, Judi Conway of Boring, Jacqueline Erhardt and husband, John of Astoria, Janette Kerbo and husband, Dennis of Coos Bay and Joyce Byrd and husband, Mike of Oakland; sons, Leo Conway Jr. of Coos Bay, Daniel Conway and wife, Melody of Lakeside and William Conway and wife, Deborah of Tigard; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandchildren, Dawn Conway and Justin DeBerry; and by a daughter of her heart, Rose Jamison.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Start Making a Reader Today, 170 S. Second St., Coos Bay OR 97420.
Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service-Bay Area, 269-2851.
