BANDON — Bandon’s volleyball team is picking a great time to peak.

The Tigers played their best ball of the season in the first two games of their Sunset Conference playoff match against Coquille on Tuesday and walked off the court with the league’s No. 2 seed for the Class 3A playoffs.

In the process, Bandon beat Coquille for the second time in a week and affirmed its second-place finish during the league season.

“I feel amazing,” said Bandon setter Kelsey Hinojosa after the players went around hugging all the friends they could find during their post-match celebration.

“I think we played the best we’ve ever played,” Hinojosa said. “We went out there, we knew what we had to do and we did it.”

The Tigers beat the Red Devils 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21.

Their reward probably is the tougher draw of the two in the playoffs, which begin Saturday with eight first-round matches. Those eight winners advance to the Class 3A tournament in Eugene.

Bandon plays West Valley League co-champion Sheridan, which lost to Valley Catholic in that league’s tiebreaker Tuesday night. Sheridan had overtaken Valley Catholic in the final coaches poll, ranking second, with Valley Catholic third, both trailing Santiam Christian. Myrtle Point, the No. 4 seed in the Sunset Conference, visits Valley Catholic.

Coquille, which is the Sunset Conference’s No. 3 seed, will play either Portland Adventist or Catlin Gabel, which meet tonight in the Lewis & Clark League playoffs. Catlin Gabel, the regular-season champion, was ranked ninth in the final poll.

Bandon got a lot of confidence for its playoff match with its victory Tuesday.

“It’s exactly what we needed,” Hinojosa said.

The Tigers surged to a quick lead in the opening game behind the strong arm of outside hitter Grace Garrett, who finished with 18 kills, two stuff blocks and three service aces. Teammates Karli Crook and Jennifer Torres also contributed kills along the way, with Torres providing the big run with five straight kills after Coquille had trimmed a six-point deficit to an 18-16 Bandon lead. An ace by Garrett and a kill by Crook finished off a 7-0 run to end the game.

Garrett also provided Bandon’s first three points in the second game, with a pair of kills sandwiched around a stuff block. But the teams traded runs throughout, with Coquille staying close until late in the game. Nikki Hall and Allison Cook had back-to-back kills to pull the Red Devils within 18-17, but then Bandon finished on a 7-1 run with kills by both Karli and Kacy Crook and several hitting errors by the Red Devils.

“The first two games, we played the best we have,” Kacy Crook said.

The Tigers were passing well and also played great defense, digging up many of Coquille’s attacks.

The Red Devils bounced back in the third game, leading nearly the entire way. They got a big boost from senior Clare Foster, who had two aces during a five-point service run that pushed Coquille in front for good.

Serving was perhaps the best part of Coquille’s match Tuesday. The Red Devils had nine aces, including two each by Foster, Cook and Chelsy Forbes. Karlie Libby, another reserve, added an ace in the final game.

Coquille led that one most of the way, too, after an early run of points that included two kills by Kelsey Hill and one each by Taylor Gederos and Courtney Davis. Forbes had a kill with a quick tip from her setter position and Hill had another blast to give Coquille its biggest lead at 17-12, but then the game fell apart for the Red Devils.

A serve into the net put Hinojosa at the service line for the Tigers and she reeled off seven straight points, including an ace and kills by both Crook sisters, to give Bandon the lead.

Coquille managed to tie it at 20 on Libby’s ace, but Bandon finished with a 5-1 run, ending the match on a powerful kill by Garrett off the hands of two Coquille blockers.

The Tigers are thrilled to be in the playoffs at all. Their last trip was in 2005, before the current seniors were in high school.

“This is new territory for us,” said Bandon coach Courtney Freitag. “I’m super stoked.”

The Red Devils also are looking forward to the playoffs, hoping to improve from last year, when they lost their first-round match in five sets at Vale.

“I’m excited we’re still in the playoffs,” Forbes said. “But I really wanted to beat Bandon.”

The Red Devils weren’t as sharp as a night earlier, when they won an emotional match with Myrtle Point.

“The first games, we didn’t play as well,” Forbes said. “(On Saturday) we have to come out ready to win from the start.”

Coquille coach Danielle McKinley said her team didn’t pass the ball well in serve-receive, which knocked the entire offense out of rhythm.

“Maybe two nights in a row was too much,” she said.

Hall and Cook combined for 17 kills, while Forbes had 26 assists and seven digs. Libero Kaitlyn Altenbach added 14 digs and Foster had seven digs in limited time on the court.

For the Tigers, Karli Crook had 13 kills and three aces, while Torres had 11 kills, Hinojosa added 40 assists and Marissa Ramos had 23 digs.
