COQUILLE — The Coquille volleyball team is surging into the Class 3A playoffs on a wave of momentum spurred by good teamwork.
The Red Devils, who had to overcome an 0-3 start to the Sunset Conference season and later beat Rogue River in the regular-season finale last week just to make the league playoffs, swept visiting Myrtle Point on Monday to move up to at least the league’s No. 3 seed for the state playoffs.
Coquille, which won 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, visits Bandon tonight to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.
If the Red Devils play like they did Monday, the Tigers will be in for a tough fight.
“I thought we played really good tonight,” said Coquille libero Kaitlyn Altenbach. “I think we were talking a lot better.”
The communication on the court led to a better defensive effort. Meanwhile, improved passing led to an impressive offensive showing against the Bobcats.
Of Coquille’s 75 points Monday night, 52 came either directly from kills or service aces. By the end of the match, four players had at least eight kills, an offensive balance that was tough for Myrtle Point to counter.
“I think we were great,” said Coquille’s Kelsey Hill, one of the key players in the win. “We just felt it today.”
In the first game, the Red Devils had kills on six straight points to break a 7-all tie. Hill started the run with a blast, and Taylor Gederos followed with a powerful smash from her middle blocker position. Hill added two more kills and then Gederos and Allison Cook finished the run.
Myrtle Point twice rallied to within two points, but the Red Devils finished the game with a kill by Hill and a hitting error by the Bobcats.
In the second game, Nikki Hall took the lead for the Red Devils with seven kills. Hill had two early aces to help Coquille build a lead, and a third ace late in the set put Coquille in front 22-10.
Myrtle Point rallied with 10 of the next 11 points, including one of seven aces on the night by Meghan Ross and five kills by Peyton Babb. But Cook stopped the run with a kill for the Red Devils and Hall finished the game with another.
Coquille then had six aces in the final game, including two each by Cook and Hall, and the Red Devils overcame another late rally. Cook put the match away with a kill down the right sideline that the Bulldogs couldn’t dig up.
“We really wanted this game, especially because it’s Myrtle Point,” said Hill, who finished with 10 kills, four aces and eight digs.
Hall had a team-high 12 kills and two aces. Gederos added eight kills, two aces and a stuff block, while Cook had eight kills and two aces. Altenbach had 19 digs on defense and setter Chelsy Forbes had 32 assists.
Coquille coach Danielle McKinley loves the variety of weapons Coquille has, also including Courtney Davis, who didn’t get many attempts Monday.
“It’s awesome,” she said. “And they were all on tonight.”
The win was more impressive considering that Myrtle Point didn’t play poorly.
The good news for the Bobcats is that they also are in the playoffs, as the league’s No. 4 seed. They will travel to either top-ranked Valley Catholic or No. 2 Sheridan on Saturday. Those teams play tonight in the West Valley League playoffs.
“I think it’s exciting,” said Ross. “We’re still going to play our best in the playoffs.
“We play with heart. We all want it.”
Ross said the Bobcats struggled a little in serve-receive Monday, partly responsible for Coquille’s 11 aces, but added that she was excited by the big comebacks by her team in the second and third games.
“I’m excited,” she said.
Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson noted that her team still is relatively young.
“The errors we make are inexperience errors,” she said, adding that she looks forward to the weekend.
“We get to do a trip,” she said. “We didn’t get to go to the playoffs last year.”
Babb finished with 10 kills, 12 digs and two stuff blocks for the Bobcats, while Ross added five kills, seven digs and her seven aces. Kaitlyn McCollum had six kills and two aces and setter Jazmine Grantham had 19 assists.
