North Bend’s girls soccer team advanced to the state playoffs by beating Umpqua Valley Christian in a penalty kick shootout at River Forks Park in Roseburg on Monday.

The Bulldogs stayed alive in the match when Taylor Cribbins had her third goal of the day just before the end of regulation, knotting the score at 3-3.

After neither team scored in two 10-minute overtime periods, the match went to a penalty kick shootout and North Bend goalie Anna Houghton came up big to extend the team’s season.

After North Bend missed its opening penalty kick, Beth Longerstedt scored for Umpqua Valley Christian.

But that turned out to be UVC’s only conversion. Houghton saved two of the next three kicks and the other went off one of the posts.

Meanwhile, North Bend’s Cribbins, Kyla Feaster and Amelia Liggett all made their attempts. When Houghton stopped a shot by Hannah Hawkins, the Bulldogs celebrated their big win.

“What a heck of a ballgame,” North Bend coach Dustin Hood said. “That’s incredible. It’s too bad we couldn’t both move on.”

North Bend will open the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A playoffs on Saturday at either Philomath or Sweet Home. Those teams play today and North Bend gets the loser.

Hood was delighted with how his team handled the pressure of the league playoff match, especially since only Brooke Davison had any previous playoff experience in a team sport.

“These girls played with a lot of grit and determination tonight,” he said.

Neither team scored for the first 30 minutes, but then Longerstedt put UVC up 1-0 with a goal in the 32nd minute. Cribbins had two goals before halftime, one assisted by Nicole Medford, to put North Bend in front 2-1 at the break.

UVC took the lead with goals by Arielle Chasteen in the 44th minute and Sarah Patton in the 58th. The latter goal came off a corner kick by Danni Buechley.

Cribbins scored in the 78th minute to force the overtime.

UVC had finished third and North Bend fourth in the final league standings.
