Dr. Dakota is escorted by Colleen Williamson of Coos Bay at Life Care Center on Friday afternoon for the first Halloween Pooch Pageant.
COOS BAY — This little doggie quite literally saddled up.
Although, you wouldn’t use the word “little” to describe Kahlua. The Great Dane’s pink nose complimented her hot pink saddle blanket and the athletic tape she sported above her paws in true race horse fashion.
“Everyone always calls her a horse, so it was just obvious,” owner Justine Paullus said of her dog’s equestrian get-up.
The small, black saddle was purchased online — though it took some searching.
“You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a saddle,” Paullus said.
It’s intended to be for a rocking horse, she said.
The outfit earned her an award in the Pooch Pageant on Friday at the Life Care Center.
She was up against some stiff competition.
Canines were dolled up as fairy princesses and doctors, while others were in casual attire like frilly blouses.
“My wife dresses her up all the time,” said Lee Erbele, cradling Spirit, a Boston terrier who wore a lacy pink top to the function.
The dogs strutted their stuff before a panel of judges and an audience of a dozen residents, as a fundraiser for the Coos County Animal Shelter. Categories included; most attractive, scariest, most original and best of show.
Teddy, a 5-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix, was named the scariest of the pack. His shaggy hide was concealed under a black cat costume, complete with whiskers.
Today, he’ll accompany humans Zandraya and Josephina, 8 and 4 years old respectively, for some trick or treating. They’ll be dressed as witches and Teddy will tag along as their mischievous black cat. Mom Mellissa Shyrer said Teddy isn’t the least bit offended being paraded around town as a feline.
“He likes cats,” Shyrer said. “He plays with them all the time.”
He is accustomed to wearing costumes anyway. Zandraya like to dress him for any occasion, usually with baby clothes.
