Marshfield’s boys cross country team qualified for the state meet for the first time in a decade on Wednesday, finishing second to Thurston in the Midwestern League championships at Lane Community College.

The news wasn’t as good for Marshfield’s girls, as the Pirates failed to qualify as a team or advance any individuals to the state meet on Nov. 7, also at Lane Community College.

“We’re really happy that we advanced a full boys team to state,” Marshfield coach Doug Landrum said.

The Pirates ran well, paced by Andrew Davidson’s sixth-place finish, Landrum said. Thurston just was a little better.

Markus Boesl was ninth and Tyler Nixon 11th for Marshfield.

Thurston finished with 30 points, to 57 for Marshfield. Springfield’s Dylan Arana took the individual title in 16 minutes, 1 second for the 5,000-meter course. Churchill’s Mark Sheridan was second in 16:42 and followed by three Thurston runners.

Marshfield placed all seven of its runners in the top 19 overall, while Thurston had its seven among the top 14 finishers.

Marshfield’s girls, who had qualified for state three straight years, dropped all the way to fifth on Wednesday.

Thurston won with 47 points, followed by Springfield with 52, North Eugene with 60 and Churchill with 79. Marshfield finished with 102. The top Pirate, Jasmine Meline, finished in 12th place, and missed qualifying for state as an individual by three spots. Tori Scott was 14th. Springfield’s Caitlyn Holmes won the race in 20:12.

The Far West League district meet is today at Tugman State Park near Lakeside, while the area’s smaller schools compete in their district meet at Bullards Beach State Park near Bandon on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER

North Bend ties Sutherlin

North Bend’s girls soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Sutherlin on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs got a goal by Nicole Medford in the 47th minute. Sutherlin tied the score with a goal by Chelsea Spencer in the 73rd minute.

“It was kind of a muddy, sloppy game,” North Bend coach Dustin Hood said.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season 5-3-4, one point behind Umpqua Valley Christian (6-4-2) in the race for third place. That means the Monarchs will host the Bulldogs at River Forks Park in Roseburg on Monday for a spot in the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A playoffs. The match tentatively is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Lancers beat Glide

South Umpqua upset visiting Glide 5-3 on Wednesday, clinching the league title for Brookings-Harbor.

Shay Harvey had a pair of goals for the Lancers and Whitney Nolan had two assists.

The Wildcats finished the season 7-2-3. South Umpqua was 4-7-1.

Brookings-Harbor finishes the season today with a match at Coquille.
