College provides career training in health care

Saturday, October 24, 2009 |
Southwestern Oregon Community College has several opportunities for people interested in health care careers.
Southwestern offers both a face-to-face and an online version of the basic nursing assistant courses, and is hoping to have its first cohort of students leading earning certificates as phlebotomy technicians by winter term, a press release said.
Southwestern’s Basic Nursing Assistant Statewide Distributed Learning Program is being developed in response to a rising need for trained nursing assistants in hospital and healthcare facilities, according to a press release. Graduates of the program will have the education and practical skills to qualify for positions in healthcare facilities throughout the state.
This course prepares students for certification as outlined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. The student is prepared to care for clients in a variety of settings including long-term care, intermediate care, home health, hospice care, acute care, foster care, and assisted living situations. Students must be formally admitted to the course. Completion of the course is the first step in the Certified Nursing Assistant pathway toward CNA Level II certification.
Both programs are restricted entry and a background check and labs are required. The application deadline is Oct. 26.
Southwestern also will offer the certificate of completion as a phlebotomy technician. As a restricted entry program, students must submit an application and be accepted before phlebotomy courses can be taken.
The start date is pending a full roster of 10 qualified applications.
For information or an application to any of the above programs, call 888-7443 or visit Sumner Hall, Room 4, on the Coos Bay campus. Applications are required for entry and financial aid is available.
