The state has dropped sex abuse charges against Wendi Boutiette, but she’s still reeling from the events of the past nine months. Her 9-year-old son has wondered whether his mom would go to jail. She stepped down as Coquille High School’s track coach and has only sporadically found work. And she has learned that many people don’t wait for a court ruling to judge guilt or innocence.

“You find support in crazy places and lose support in places you least expect it,” she said Thursday.

Boutiette first met her accuser when he was an eighth-grader on the Coquille Middle School track team. She was his coach. Their paths crossed again when he moved to the high school and she took an assistant coaching position.

Their relationship extended beyond the track, Boutiette says. She offered him rides to Myrtle Point so he could see a girlfriend there, and she gave him jobs around her house so he could buy gifts for his flame. But that was the extent of their interactions, she said.

The relationship took an ugly turn in February, when he accused Boutiette of having sex with him when he was 17.

Coquille police arrested Boutiette on charges of second-degree sex abuse and two counts of third-degree sex abuse. She maintained her innocence and planned to go to trial next week, but her accuser had a change of heart.

The young man had been working with prosecutors, but he recently refused to continue to cooperate.

On Thursday, the Douglas County District Attorney’s office announced it had filed a motion to dismiss the sex-abuse charges against Boutiette.

She is grateful the case is heading toward acquittal, but the ordeal has taken its toll. She has moved her two children to Coos Bay schools to avoid harassment. She has been unable to work as a coach or substitute teacher, and her father had to refinance her parents’ home to pay for her legal fees. After police hinted there was more than one alleged victim, her attorney revealed that she’d had sexual relations with two men outside her marriage.

“I tend to be a trusting person, and that has clearly backfired in my face,” she said. “It definitely feels like I have an uphill battle ahead of me.”

The sex-abuse charges stemmed from an alleged incident in 2006. The motion to dismiss charges has been submitted to Circuit Court Judge Paula Bechtold, though it has not been signed, an assistant in her office said Thursday. Bechtold has been attending a judicial conference in Salem and is expected back in her office by today, the assistant said.

Boutiette’s attorney, David Terry of Roseburg, blamed both the Coquille police and the alleged victim for damaging Boutiette’s character.

“The great bulk of the people in the community don’t believe innocent people get arrested,” he said. “The fact is, he lied in grand jury. He lied to the police.”

He said Boutiette passed two polygraph tests supporting her innocence. The first test asked if she had had sex with the alleged victim. The second asked if she had had any contact of a sexual nature with him. Terry submitted the results of the first polygraph test to state courts in May. It was conducted by Mark Ranger of Ranger Polygraph Service in Roseburg.

Boutiette suspects the young man was hanging around with his friends and wound up spinning a yarn to impress them.

“My gut instinct was he was bragging to some friends,” she said. “But taking bragging to lying is a whole new level. Much of the blame lies at his feet.”

Terry said Boutiette doesn’t plan to sue the former student, though he plans to talk with Boutiette about filing a lawsuit against the police department. Terry suggested the police failed to conduct a proper investigation.

Boutiette says she expects to move out of Coquille.

“I can’t raise my kids in a community I don’t feel safe in,” she said.

I just love some of these posts. Again, were this a 30 something man and a 17 year old boy, or a 30 something man and a 17 year old girl the posts would be very different. Hey World, how about obtaining the police reports and publishing them? Would be great to see. Think everyone would be in for a shock.

Well Coquille claims another innocent family....if you are a upstanding citizen of Coquille, who has done nothing but give to your community in positive ways or a citizen who lives by the rules and minds your own business....GET OUT OF COQUILLE before it and the crimnals and busy bodies claim your life!!!!!!!

TruthTeller wrote on Oct 27, 2009 4:21 PM:

To Wow, again you really need to get a clue. Police reports are legal documents. But that doesn't mean they are truthfull either. Believe me.

The Uninvited Guest wrote on Oct 27, 2009 11:02 AM:

I remember hearing about a case very similar to this a few years back except the male student was only 14. The female teacher got off with probabtion even though women can control themselves better than men which makes it even worse.

dan milburn wrote on Oct 27, 2009 11:00 AM:

Why did her lawyer pipe up with " she slept with a couple of different guys when she was marraide"?
And that was after the D.A. said he might bring in a few more teenagers with similar claims.
What is the difference in infadelity? Her own lawyer says she is an adulterous! And she stands that there nodding yep! Now let's all pity the girl for literaly screwing up the lives of her children? This is bigger joke than Letterman.

WOW wrote on Oct 26, 2009 7:39 PM:

LOL if poly's were so reliable they would be admissible in a court of law, regardless of who administers it. And police reports are legal documents. They state the facts. Why else would it be a crime to file a false one if it didn't mean anything? And why does it mean he would perjure himself if he continued forward? Lots of rape victims don't follow through through the legal process. I think that is their perogative, since they have rights as victims, too. And if Wendi was so innocent, she would keep quiet about things and take care of her family. I know Wendi AND the young man. I personablly believe she took advantage and the police report supports it.

Coquiller wrote on Oct 26, 2009 1:39 PM:

It's frustrating that the young man waited this long to "not cooperate". Going after the police dept is not what Wendi needs to focus on!

hey its me wrote on Oct 26, 2009 12:28 PM:

There will always be someone that thinks she didn't do anything and someone that thinks she did, no matter what happend/happends or what is reported. Everyone has a right to their own opinion.

standupgal wrote on Oct 26, 2009 7:35 AM:

Hey Wow!!

Police reports are not always statements of fact. They are written in a way to make the report favorable to whatever side they want to take. They can leave out information, twist information, and interpret information to suit them.

Oh by the way, the new polygraph methods are EXTREMELY RELIABLE. That is why the FBI uses them to eliminate suspects in cases. Wendi's poly's were given by a very reliable polygrapher and verified by the Douglas county polygrapher.

I know this young man, and he would not have kept quiet for 5 minutes if this had really happened. He supposedly kept it to himself for 3 years! Yeah, right!

standupgal wrote on Oct 25, 2009 10:21 PM:

Wow, Leave it to the Coquillian to try to keep putting her down. Do you know what is in the police report? If so, that must mean you are in a position to have seen it. Are you aware that the police can put anything they want in a report, meaning they can leave out information that would exonerate her or write it to make it look worse than it is.

Had she been convicted she was looking at hard jail time because of Measure 11.

By the way, he is not a boy, he is now a 21 year old man with a guilty conscience. The letter, as summarized, says his conscience got the better of him. To WOW, refusing to cooperate means he did not want to perjure himself, and if he admits he lied and he was before a grand jury, he is in real trouble.

Wendi is a strong woman, but she will never be able to do the things that she had planned to do as regards teaching and coaching nor does she want to at this point.

dannygs wrote on Oct 25, 2009 10:19 PM:

WOW: what does the public record indicate? who is to be believed here in your opinion?

WOW wrote on Oct 24, 2009 2:08 PM:

Do you all think the World has reported all the facts on this case? DOn't tell my you're relying on what the World has reported so far. You should all check into the public record on this case. Your opinion would drastically change.

Just Me wrote on Oct 24, 2009 11:52 AM:

You go girl! I wish you and your family the best. If I were in your shoes right now, I would be considering a lawsuit also. This kid ran you and your family through the mud and ruined your life as you knew it, and then when push came to shove, like the liar he evidently turned out to be, he ran and left you hanging out to dry! Good luck to you as you start your new life.

The Uninvited Guest wrote on Oct 24, 2009 10:30 AM:

She probably would have got off with some probation even if convicted. Sexism often comes through in these situations in which a male would be thrown in prison.

hiluix wrote on Oct 23, 2009 6:52 PM:

I cant wait to get on jury duty and not put anyone in jail , the corruption is appalling in Coos County , and I wont be part of it , jury nullification here I come .

Just An Observer wrote on Oct 23, 2009 6:37 PM:

It's hard to face one's accusers in court when those who made the initial accusation won't show up to testify. Too bad we the public don't have the name of the accuser. Everyone knows who the accused is after all and fair's fair!

Now we will never know for sure if this lady was truly guilty or truly innocent. Her future is clouded by this affair. The kid who made the accusations will be remembered by all who know who he is for some pretty negative things too. Justice is denied and no matter who is really guilty, the lady or the kid, they walk free in the legal sense but never in the personal sense.

If I was the DA I'd be of a mind to put the kid on trial for false accusations and see what shakes.

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 23, 2009 6:24 PM:

Isn't there a thing called a subpeona, if a person is unwilling to cooperate? DUH!!!!!!

coquillian wrote on Oct 23, 2009 5:46 PM:

I am hoping that the DA will release the entire report. Then people will see everything.

carefree highway wrote on Oct 23, 2009 5:44 PM:

Having driven school buses for NB/CB school districts, I can understand Wendys frustration. Kids can accuse you of anything anytime, and you are guilty until proven innocent. Sent home, lose days from work, all stressed out w/family and your employer doesnt reimburse you while pending witch-hunt trials (if ever conclude). Kid and his parents? oh they get off SCOTT FREE!! Time for them to be sued and held accountable, along with the employer for not staying neutral until its resolved.

hey its me wrote on Oct 23, 2009 3:14 PM:

Victims of crimes are forced to re-live their ordeals going through the legal process which can be more painful than the crime itself especially when information becomes public. Maybe this boy doesn't want everyone to know what he may have been put through. If this kid is a troubled kid, liar, whatever, why isn't she going after him for messing up her life?

Norse Girl wrote on Oct 23, 2009 3:01 PM:

A family member of mine had false accusations made against them a few years back and was found rightfully innocent by the jury. But the whole process took over a year! The time and money wasted to defend your innocence is stressful and the emotional toll it takes on your family is hard. Thankfully for my family member - they weren't in a line of work that landed them in the local media's news. I feel this woman's pain and her family's pain. Thankfully in her case it worked out right. She may still have some struggles but it could have played out a lot worse. I say "let sleeping dogs lie" and move on with your life.

Just Us wrote on Oct 23, 2009 2:51 PM:

I hope she does sue the Police Department! They were asking boys...my son included...if she had any kind of inappropriate behavior with them...even if they said no, they kept asking in different ways to get a better answer. This case was clearly done wrong. They jumped to arresting her way too fast! I feel really sorry for her family. She seemed like a really good track coach. Probably wasn't from Coos County originally. That's why they found her guilty before she was even tried. Wish I could move too!

just a guy wrote on Oct 23, 2009 2:45 PM:

The sad truth is that Ms. Boutiette will have to live with a cloud of suspicion. Since she works with minors for her career, the hint of suspicion will follow her everywhere. Never again will everyone believe she is innocent - and that's the hard truth.
To the young man who had the "guts" to ruin a career, but not the "guts" to actually go to court - may your reputation be treated just as fairly as you treated your former coaches.

We haven't heard any comments from the boy. Maybe he didn't want to sit in court and have to be drug threw the mud and poor lady? Give me a break, she should have been concerned with WHO she hung around with and WHAT she did before now, and the husband knew nothing of her doing things for this boy or her affair with the two other guys? Now she wants to sue Coquille. If the boy made this up why isn't she after him too?

QWCS wrote on Oct 23, 2009 12:26 PM:

WOW to you too! This lady has had her life ripped apart and ruined and it's because of people like you who've presumed guilt. That's both un-American and unfair. Let's hope it's you next time.

Hey WOW!!!

Passing two poly's when the victim refused to take a poly does not tell she is innocent. What kind of person are you?? I hope to God that you or somone you love, never have charges like this against you. I also hope that those of you that have spoken out against her will shut your mouths.

Swede,
YOu sure hit the mark with your comment. Hopefully, there will be many echoes of you.

Wendi has walked through the valley of Hell, and she will be OK. What a shame that she will never coach again because of her fears. She was really great with the kids.
