A memorial service will be held for Donn Harding Powell, 88, of North Bend, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, at the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 2630 34th St., Coos Bay. Pastor Tim Horton will officiate. Interment will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens.
Donn was born March 15, 1921, at Prineville, the son of Lloyd and Lenora (Houston) Powell. He died Oct. 21, 2009, surrounded by his family at his North Bend home.
He was raised and educated in central Oregon, where he gave his heart to God while attending church camp one summer. Thus began a lifelong devotion to the Lord. He was married to Lois Rae Hopkins and he served as pastor at several Missionary Baptist churches in California and Oregon before moving to the Bay Area 58 years ago. Donn worked tirelessly as a missionary in Coquille and Coos Bay and was a member of the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Coos Bay. He supported his family by working for the State Highway Department and together with Lois, his true helpmate and companion, selling J. R. Watkins products.
Donn enjoyed writing poetry and songs, gathering for family get-togethers, and studying the scriptures. He had earned a doctorate in Bible languages.
Donn is survived by his daughter, Edie and Jimmy Brown of North Bend; grandsons, Jim and Gina Brown of North Bend and Gary Brown of Toledo; granddaughter, Cindy and Jess Thomas of Toledo; five great-grandchildren, Sarah, Clay, Riley, McKenzie and Hayden; sister, Jean and Don Church of Gresham; sister-in-law, Ira Powell of Prineville; and sister-in-law, Jo Powell of Longview, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois in 2007; brothers, Willard and Robert “Bob” Powell; and a brother and his wife, Virgil and Elda Powell.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.
