Lee was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Coquille the son of John and Nellie Violet (Cox) Sutton. He died Oct. 7, 2009, in Bandon following a stroke.

He grew up in Bandon and Coquille. After graduating high school in Coquille, he moved to Southern California to attend engineering college. He met and fell in love with his best friend’s sister, Florence Marie Fisher. Lee and “Flo” were married Aug. 2, 1939, in Las Vegas, Nev., and stayed in the Los Angeles, Calif., area raising their three children.

During this time, Lee proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. Lee worked as a carpenter for years and then became a pioneer in the space industry working for NASA at the propulsion lab in Pasadena, Calif., in the late 1950s, retiring in the early 1970s. He and Flo then moved back to Bandon to rejoin his mother, Nellie Maben. Lee became very active in the local Bandon VFW Post No. 3440 and was a past commander. He served on the city council for several years. He and Flo shared a love for animals and worked part time at the West Coast Game Park.

Lee is survived by his wife, Flo Sutton of Bandon; daughters, Joyce Sutton of Eugene and Cindy Mattson and husband, Dave of Poynette, Wis.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and dearest friend, Elaine Caldwell of Bandon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jack Sutton and Bill Maben; and son, Lee S. Sutton.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the VFW Medal of Honor Post No. 3440, 55382 Bates Road, Bandon, OR 97411.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
