Volleyball Recap: Marshfield gets sweep in Eugene

Marshfield beat host North Eugene, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 on Tuesday to stay in sole possession of second place in the Midwestern League volleyball standings.

Kara Young had 10 kills and 10 digs for the Pirates, while Nikki Gross had 17 assists and 11 digs and Kaylee Anderson had seven aces.

Marshfield hosts third-place Churchill on Thursday and the second-annual Marshfield Invitational on Saturday.

Far West League

Bulldogs beat Douglas

North Bend celebrated senior night with a 25-7, 25-23, 25-15 win over visiting Douglas on Tuesday, staying perfect in the Far West League.

The Bulldogs have one more home date, but the matches on Halloween will be played during the day, so the school chose to honor the seniors Tuesday.

Junior Haley Dunham had nine service points in a row to give the Bulldogs a big lead in the opener.

Senior Alexandra Mateski had 16 kills and 12 digs for North Bend, while Dunham had 13 kills and 13 digs.

The other five seniors also contributed in the win. Libero Ashley Horlacher had 10 digs and five aces, while Justine Head had 12 digs and Katie Banta had 34 assists. Alicia Heredia had four kills and Lorin Krossman played in the back row, contributing six digs and an ace.

Taylor Bond had seven kills for the Trojans. Janna Shigley added 14 assists and two stuff blocks.

North Bend plays in the Marshfield Invitational on Saturday and visits South Umpqua on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finish at  home with Siuslaw and Brookings-Harbor on Oct. 31.

Bruins beats Lancers

Brookings-Harbor beat visiting South Umpqua, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 on Tuesday.

The Bruins improved to 5-2 and stayed tied with Siuslaw for second place in the league standings. The Lancers fell to 3-4, falling two games behind in the battle for the playoffs with three matches to go.

Nicole Watterson had 14 kills and 10 blocks for the Bruins. Sarah Pate added 17 kills and Danielle Ambrose had eight kills and 17 assists and three blocks.

Shelby Bay had nine kills and 12 digs for the Lancers.

Vikings top Sutherlin

Siuslaw topped visiting Sutherlin on Tuesday, 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-4.

Seabre Church had 21 kills for the Vikings. Jenna Hanslits added five kills.

The match was senior night for Church, Hanslits, Stacie Voogd, Kate Henry, Makahla Huff and Gabbie Schaffner.

Kasse Freeman had seven blocks, 13 digs and two kills for Sutherlin. Tessa Knight added four kills, a block and 20 digs.

Sunset Conference

Bobcats beat Panthers

Myrtle Point beat visiting Gold Beach, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 on Tuesday, moving back into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

The Bobcats had a good all-around effort while improving to 7-4 with three matches to go, one win ahead of Coquille, Bandon and Rogue River.

“My middles did a really good job tonight,” said Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson. “They got involved in the game and I was glad to see that.”

Kaitlyn McCollum had nine kills and six blocks and Amanda Sturgill had five kills and two blocks.

Jazmine Grantham had 21 assists and eight digs and Peyton Babb had six kills and 18 digs for the Bobcats. Meghan Ross added 11 kills and 11 digs.

Hixson was thrilled with the effort by the Bobcats on defense.

“They’re stepping up and working really hard in the back row to get the ball up to the setter,” she said.

The Bobcats also served with a 93-percent accuracy rate.

“I’m happy with that,” Hixson said.

Frankie Lemmon had eight kills and two blocks for the Panthers. Katherine Zuber had nine kills and a block and McKenzie Litterell had seven kills. Katie Moore had 16 assists and Lindsey McDonald had 12 digs.

Coquille tips Braves

Coquille topped host Reedsport 25-12, 25-11, 21-25, 25-15 on Tuesday, damaging the Braves slim playoff hopes.

Taylor Gederos had four aces, 14 kills and two blocks to lead the Red Devils. Kelsey Hill had 12 kills and Kaitlyn Altenbach had 22 digs.

Eden Huebner had eight kills, eight digs and three blocks for the Braves. Brianna Smith had six kills and five blocks and Monica Vaughn added five aces and two kills.

Coquille improved to 6-5 in league play, while Reedsport fell to 4-7, meaning the Braves are two games out of fourth place with just three to play, starting with a match Thursday at Bandon.

“We need a lot of help now,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh.

Chieftains top Tigers

Rogue River swept visiting Bandon 25-13, 25-20, 25-17 on Tuesday.

Alli Ehrhardt led the Chieftains with six blocks, 10 kills and four digs, while Makaela Stalker added four kills and seven digs.

Challengers crush Glide

Cascade Christian wrapped up the outright league title with a 25-14, 25-5, 25-10 win over visiting Glide.

Breanna Holtz had 25 assists, while Amanda Kinney and Becca Sellers combined for 24 kills for the Challengers, who stayed perfect at 11-0 in league play.

Skyline League

Pirates win

Pacific beat Camas Valley in four games Tuesday, 25-20, 25-10, 23-25, 25-12.

The Pirates improved to 3-7 in league play, and moved ahead of the Hornets (2-6) in the league standings.

“The energy was a lot higher before the game, which gave me a good feeling,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag. “They played well and they talked. We had a little bit of a letdown in the third game. But the girls were able to overcome that tonight.”

Jesse Culley had nine kills and a block for the Pirates. Devon Ashdown had eight aces and 12 assists. Jordan White added 14 digs.

Wolves top Cruisers

League-leading Days Creek swept visiting Powers 25-15, 25-22, 25-10 on Tuesday.

“We came out and played pretty hard in the first couple of sets and gave Days Creek a lot of good rallies,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “But they were just scrappy and got everything off the floor. In the third game, we started flat and Days Creek did not.”

Liz Linderman had five kills and Leeanna Sears added four for the Cruisers. Merry Ray had nine digs and KC Carter had eight assists.
