Lakers third at tourney

The Southwestern Oregon Community College volleyball team placed third in the Southwestern crossover tournament Saturday, with Taylor Scott, Rose Mattson and Kelly Millager voted to the all-tournament team.

Columbia Basin Community College finished undefeated and took first place, and Clark Community College took second, winning a three-way tiebreaker with Southwestern and Treasure Valley Community College after each finished the weekend 2-2. Umpqua Community College finished fifth.

The Lakers finished the tournament with a loss to Clark in four games before beating Umpqua in three Saturday afternoon.

Southwestern fell to Clark 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23, with Millager slamming 12 kills and Mattson finishing with 11 to lead the team. Maria Ciccarelli had seven kills, and setters Hilary Hendricks and Alex Wagner totaled 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Scott led the team with 16 digs and impressive passing in serve receive.

“This was a tough loss,” Southwestern coach John Speasl said. “It was very close the whole match.”

Southwestern dominated Umpqua 25-17, 25-10, 25-11, with Hendricks and Mattson serving up four aces apiece.

Millager led the Lakers with 10 kills and two solo blocks, Katie Jolliffe added six kills, Mattson totaled four and Ciccarelli and Erin Fullerton had three kills each.

“The team played really well which made it a lopsided match,” Speasl said.

In Saturday’s other matches, Columbia Basin topped Clark  25-18, 25-16, 25-21, and Treasure Valley beat Umpqua 25-11, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, before losing to Columbia Basin 25-22, 25-15, 25-17.

Soccer teams fall

Southwestern’s soccer teams lost home matches to Clark on Saturday.

Clark beat Southwestern’s men 3-1, after going up 3-0 with goals from Ben Maramontes in the 19th minute, Lidio Ramirez in the 34th minute and Maramontes again in the 48th minute.

Fernando Gonzalez scored Southwestern’s goal in the 64th minute, with an assist from Manny Mendoza.

Southwestern dropped to 2-5-1, and plays at last place South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Wash., on Saturday.

Southwestern’s women lost 2-1 to Clark.

Clark took a 2-0 lead, with goals from Mikayla Ravenburg in the ninth minute and Geneva Burdick in the 50th minute. Sarah Smith netted the Lakers’ goal in the 75th minute, with an assist from Maria Moylan.

The Lakers dropped to 1-5-2, and travel to Lane Community College on Saturday.

Cross country

Southwestern’s men fielded a full team for the Mike Hodges Invitational at Clackamas Community College on Saturday despite illness and injuries, finishing 14th with 375 points.

The top finishers for Southwestern’s men were Tyco Sedler in 87th  place and Uriel Aguirre in 88th. Both finished in 22:50. Among community college runners, Sedler finished 14th and Aguirre finished 15th.

Daniel Lawrence finished 111th with a time of 23:59, Emmanual Urias was 139th and finished in 26:32 and Sam Ramirez ran a 30:13, finishing in 141st place.

Willamette took first at the meet with 63 points, and Oregon finished second with 64 points.

For Southwestern’s women, Kendra Nelson finished in 79th place at 20 minutes, 39 seconds, and Shontae Brown finished 111th place in 22:27. Laker coach Dan Neal said they ran well among a fleet of Division I opponents, and within community college runners, Nelson finished seventh and Brown was in 11th place.

The Lakers will compete at the South Region Championships at Clackamas Community College on Oct. 31.
